Title: Canon 100D RAW Workflow
Post by: canneloni on April 26, 2016, 11:29:54 AM
Hello everybody,

since nikfreak did such great work and ported magic lantern to all versions of the Canon 100D / SL1 i think it might be time to give our little camera an own RAW thread.

I would love to discuss which settings you used to get the best results and maybe share some videos you made. I would also be very interested in the way you do your postproduction.

So, i hope you like to share your experiences and thoughts about RAW on the SL1

Just beginning to find a workflow for awesome raw video with the 100D/SL1.

This afternoon I installed ML for the first time, and recorded my first MLV, continuous 1376×576 at 25 frames/s

I tried MlRawViewer, I didn't get it to work. Next I tried MLVFS (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13152.0). It works very well with Premiere Pro, which recognizes this CinemaDNG format.

I want to take advantage of RAW editing, either with Lightroom or Photoshop. None of those deals with CinemaDNG, DNG is OK of course. But now the major drawback is that it seems that MLVFS is read-only, so I can't write the DNGs :(

MLVFS (or MLP) > AE (smartimport2) > PP

MLVFS (or MLP) > AE (smartimport2) > PP

Agreed, although I've not used smartimport2. What advantages are there for using that over just opening in AE @DeafEyeJedi?

Personally in my opinion I think not only it speeds up the workflow but also organizes it for you somehow. Especially for those that enjoy using ACR. At least I do. It's a nice script and even today I question those that don't use it. Maybe it's the longer rendering times that we all have to deal with in AE which they may not like? It's a bit longer for reasons. Better rendering algorithm.  ;)

Hopefully my videos below will help you understand where I am coming from. It may seem complicated at first but after few takes you will see.

Oh, that's interesting. Thanks @DeafEyeJedi I'll download the script and give it a go for my next import. :-)

Thanks for the pointers!

If I summarize what I've learned so far:

1. MLVFS (which btw should be able to get rid of those annoying dots I still get… I posted about that issue)
2. AE via this script downloaded here: http://www.alexandsteffen.com/smartimport2.zip
   In ACR :
WB, most important (I use a blank, grey and black card when shooting)
   Chromatic aberration lens correction
Exposure / Highlights defringing if needed
   Sharpening/Noise reduction if needed
Apply VisionLog Profile (Maybe I will get Cinelog when I will be more experienced)
   Then render to DNxHD
3. PP: organize, edit, then apply VisionLOG to Rec.709 LUT to get a neutral image, then another LUT to go from Rec.709 to, e.g., a film look (not sure about this step, though)

These are some great tips, thank you guys !

But what resolution do you shoot in ? Always 1280x720 ? Or do you shoot in higher resolutions and use other formats like 2,35:1 ? Do you upscale your DNxHD clip to 1080p ? And do you have any experience with higher framerates ?

For the frame rate, I tested 23.976 (by selecting 1080p24 in Canon settings), but MLVFS reports the recorded footage to be at a weird 23.972, so I'm getting back to good ol' 25. I could test the FPS override setting in ML, though.

At 1280x720, recording flag stays yellow, so I guess that means I'm losing some frames. Now I go with 1440x602 (a ratio of 2.39, which is a popular ratio in movie theaters nowadays, and still often referred inaccurately as 2.35). With this setting, the recording flag becomes green after 15 or 20 seconds of recording.

Two years ago, I shot in H264 1280x720 at 50 fps, because I wanted to do some slow motion, but I guess you wanna talk about high fps with raw recording? Then in order to do that 50 fps, I guess one would have to lower the resolution, the limiting factor being the SD card writing speed. E.g. my 1440x602 would become 1024x428 or 992x416.

Upscaling does not seem to be a good practice to me.

Hi Guys

Newbie here, when I do try to record in RAW video using Magic Lantern it records for two seconds then "automatically stops recording".

I initial had the "hack error" on Canon firmware version 1.0.0 but upgraded to 1.0.1 and used the latest build of ML, this resolve the issue.

What I'm not sure of is if I am using the correct settings to record in RAW video, and how long the Canon 100d can record in RAW video for.

Any assistance will be appreciated. 8)

The 100D will allow you to shoot 720p continuous raw video with a UHS-I card. Max. achieved speed for the sdcard is ~39MB/s (depends on the card used). Higher resolutions will lead to less recording time. Switch down your resolution to get more seconds, plz.

Quick Question?

Why do you all use AE and don't just open the DNG Sequence in Premiere?

@canneloni.
One reason to go through acr is that it simply gives you an unrivaled output if used correctly. Demosaicing algorithms differ vastly from premiere for instance. Check this for a linear(scene referred) workflow.

Okay, that sounds very interesting, i will try it. Can i use the 5D Preset you provided in the other thread for my 100D ?

Not really but if you open up a dng from a 100D file in dng profile editor you can create you own profie. Tell me if it works :)

Hi DeafEyeJedi

Thank you I used your workflow and it worked perfectly, unbelievable how easy it was and considering how I had been battling getting the rendering right in After Effects using the RAWtoMLviewer export, then to import into After Effects and have my frames not render correctly, and I did not even look at sound yet. This is by far the easiest workflow!

To date I have tried three options, the MLviewer/AE method, the MLVtoMovie app and your method which I'm quite happy with 8)

I just have a question on how would you recommend I upscale my footage in that same workflow, I have a 100D and I recorded at 1088 x 278 at 60.006FPS continuous, now the export to .mov works perfectly. BUt I guess I'm such a newb that I still don't know how to get this upscaled within the workflow. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Kaves

Point your mouse on top of a composition and right click to get into this menu:

Then type in your preferred aspect resolution within Width/Height under Composition Settings:

Thank for your response :)

I have made the change you mentioned, however my size of the video stays smaller but the composition is at 1080p.

Hope this helps I placed a pic.

Did anyone try 10 or 12 Bit ? If so, wich do you prefer and how do you process  it ? I tried 10Bit 1728x786 with 23,976 fps. It recorded fine. I also shot a dark frame and used Danne's mlv_batch (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=10526.msg186219#msg186219) for Windows, but it doesn't look to good in the end. I get some artifacts and also vertical stripes but i'll have to test it further.

Just wanted to know how you work with 10/12 Bit :)

12-bit's and up works well w DarkFraming process. Not so much w 10-bit, if not at all or yet adds even more color noise to it afterwards.

If DF process is required for high ISO footage then stick w 12-bit otherwise make sure you can make up for the lack of light in 10-bit (fast lens or additional light source) in order to keep the ISO down especially on the 100D.

Thanks for the info! 12 Bit works and looks very good! I tried mlv_batch without DF for 10Bit but get completely wrong Blacklevel. Any info on that?
