Title: 50D RAW 70MB/s vs 70D RAW 40MB/s
Post by: ageminmo on April 20, 2016, 05:07:47 PM
Hi, I am new to the forums and also to raw video. I am now torn between 50d and 70d.

I have searched the forums and YouTube for comparisons, but still cannot find the answer.
I know that 50D has better raw write speed than 70D but could not find any comparisons in their quality.
I also watched a YouTube video  that 50d raw is incredibly better than 60d (Base on the comparison table, 60D has only 21MB/s)

This question is similar to 2014 thread, and they recommended 70D+50D combo, but I'm not sure if it's applicable today.

My questions are:
1) Is 50D's 70MB/s over 70D 40MB/s RAW really noticeable?  If YES, I will choose 50D and rent/buy a6300 if I need features especially autofocus.
2) If NOT noticeable,  is 70D RAW better than a6300 slog2?
3) Is 70D H264 better than 50D RAW? Somebody also posted in the 70D forums that
Quotethe 70d can shoot all i-frame .mp4 30p at 88mbps. it's pretty darn good

I have RX100m4 and has been looking for rugged DSLR for the past couple of weeks and bought 70D two days ago until I learned that 50D is third best next to 5Dm3 for RAW video. Yesterday, I bought 50D and was told by Canon that I cannot cancel my order but I can return back the 70D. Now I don't know if I will keep 70D or not.

The 50d raw is superior than anything i have used with a lesser data rate. Such as 550d or eosm. The data rate was 90mb roughly vs 20/40mb. At first i didn't notice much except that i couldn't record very long. When i started grading the exact same images, it was night and day. 50d has longer record times, large image sensor /quality, and grading held a better latitude. I'm an amateur and haven't put any camera above the 50d since doing my own comparisons. I owned an eosm, 550d, 7d, 5d, and mutiple 50d's. I sold the 7d, and the 5d while the others collect dust. 50d hands down by a long shot.

@keel -- would you mind to elaborate on why you sold the 7D when it has higher data rate (80mb more or less) and soon to be able to record 2.5K once 3K/UHD crop_rec becomes avail for Digic IV (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.msg182476#msg182476Digic%20IV) bodies.

Brace yourself...

Truthfully. I am not into the "K's" and new sharp lenses (per say).
I dig color, and contrast... a lot. I am not professional at all.

Another -major- reason,
I felt zero difference (at the time) between the 550d and the 7d, and I could get money for the 7d vs the 550d. The quality I got best, by a long shot, was the 50d. I use a color wheel or contrast adjustment and everything had latitude the others didn't.

Now, I have been only using the 50d for over two years so I am out of touch with the other models (honestly). I hit the mb limit with the older models, and I liked the sensor in the 50d vs the other apsc ones. I guess it is subjective because of my first response. I like old manual glass, and non-flashy film. A phone shoots 4k and the new Cooke lenses are so sharp that most pros have been diffusing the sharpness. Honestly, as crazy as it sounds... tech got completely out of control.

A cinema big screen vs a streaming service essentially are two completely different needs behind the lens. C. A. of a lens is actually amazing sometimes, especially to a guy like me. And that translates to working in Resolve as well, but i digress...
I am happy with the 50d being the last camera I need to buy before these objects end up in a landfill. Netflix, and Youtube will take an iPhone film in 4k before an Arri filmed for the large screen. Lenses got TOO sharp in my eyes. Another example, I cannot watch skateboarding 60fps (unless in slow motion) because I feel nauseated. Same thing with shakey camera movies and post 1999 video games.
Frame rate and detail, among other perfections in image quality are fascinating for looking across the universe and on the nanoscale. The K'wars are essentially the Plasma/LCD wars two decades ago, all the while LED existed and TV companies don't want you to know. I don't truly understand the need (as a film enthusiast) to go beyond Raw for color correction.

1., max write speed restricts the max continuous resolution, which means the 50D right now is able to record at 1584x892 at 25 fps (59MB/s). IF the 70D able to record in 10 bit ( im not sure) the max res will be the same.
2. it's not comperable to SLOG2, im currently trying to match my 5D Mark II with my A6300 in terms of colours, but the resolution and dynamic range is far superior on the A6300. And the colors are crap.
3. 70D h264 is the usual canon lowres compressed stuff. Buy an A6000 if you want to shoot good looking motion picture with compressed codec and AF

I think you should wait if the experts can port the new features to the 70D/7D, then try it. Until that buy 50D if you want highest quality raw for cheap.
Compared to the RX100 the colors will be mind blowing (if you process correctly) the resolution and the dynamic range will be lower.
