Title: 5D3-1.3.3 and ML
Post by: Kurtzva on March 08, 2016, 09:12:40 PM
Hi,

Love and thanks for ML!

I was wondering if a 1.3.3 version is being considered for the 5DMKIII? Thanks!

Porting to 1.3.3 has not top priority (if any). Downgrade to 1.2.3 or 1.1.3.

Is there a particular reason? I realize that the 1.3.3 change log really only consists of one thing: Improves the AF controllability when shooting in Live View mode with a wide-angle lens (fixed focal length or zoom). Is the improvement negligible? Would it not improve RAW recording experience? I would assume I'd want all the optimization I can get.

Clearly I don't know anything about ML development. I am just genuinely curious. Thanks.

Most professinal video cams don't have AF at all. 5D3 lacks support for STM/nano-USM.

In short: Nobody came up with a convincing use case.
As a general rule: If there are only minor improvements coming with a particular firmware version you won't see that much effort to keep ML up-to-date.
Updating ML is not a simple "change string xyz to abc". It costs lots of hours and not the most exciting task to look into registers. After all, it's reverse engineering and we don't have insight into Canon's development process.
