Title: Lilliput External monitor
Post by: qqqavi on October 07, 2015, 07:13:40 PM
Hi everyone.

1. I'm new to magic lantern and after having done some tests, I was thinking about buying a Lilliput external monitor for my Canon 7D (v.203). After doing some research on the forum, I've found out that is not possible to monitor the signal both on the external monitor via HDMI and on the built-in lcd, at the same time, when recording RAW. Is this information correct, with the new ML firmware?

2. What Lilliput model you guys recommend. I've read that sometimes, with other external monitors, there have been some issues about the raw footage, like skipped frames, torn image, etc. Is that information correct?

I'm sorry if these questions have been asked million times before. I can't find updated information. All that I find are threads from 2012, 2013.

Thank you.

Unfortunately true. When you connect hdmi the lcd goes off at least it does with the 600d.
But if you have an android phone /tablet using dslr controller you can have both.

Thank you for your answer.

Are there any issues about external monitors to be aware of when shooting raw?

Hi there.

I've just bought two Lilliput 5D-II/O 7 " monitors and they work well with my 7D. Both come with hdmi in & out and you can connect them together (one for the camera op.,  and the other one for the director). If you press the 5D-II button on the monitor, you can actually preview the full image on the 7¨ screen (some ML overlays are slightly cropped).
The quality isn't astonishing, however it is better than I expected for focusing and framing. Now, I'm wondering how long this monitor will last, regarding the price vs. construction quality issue.
Some people say that ¨Histogram is not the same in camera vs. external monitor¨. That's not accurate on Lilliput 5D-II. You'll get the same histogram readings.

Best.

you can't trust external monitors mattering, because 7D is not true clean HDMI out, so use magic lantern's one - it will be more accurate. 5Dmk3 with true clean out HDMI is a different story.

Thank you for your reply Ansius.
My tests shows that ML in camera histogram is the same as on external monitor at least on my 7D with the Lilliput monitor. I've been taking notes of different shots, different exposures, etc. and I haven't noticed not even a slightly variation.
