Title: Max Shutter speed of 1/120th of a second? Why is this?
Post by: samborambo56 on August 23, 2015, 12:56:47 PM
So yeah using canon 50d

Dial on M mode, Exposure override enabled and I CANNOT go past 1/120th of a second shutter speed? Have I changed something in the menus to cause this?

by the way I am trying to shoot at 860(ish)p and also 1080p in the crop mode at 23.976.

This is irritating me now.
cheers in advance guys.

Why do you want to go past 1/120 for shutter if shooting in 23.976? Too much light?

At 1/120 23.976fps the motion cadence will look terrible. It's the 'opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan' look, only more - it's ok if it's an artistic choice but absolutely not the correct way to control exposure.

Keeping to the 180° shutter rule (try 1/50 for 23.976), low ISO (although the 50D base ISO is ~180 so set it to 200) and stopping down the lens is a better option but the smaller the aperture the deeper the DOF (everything will be in focus) and you will start introducing lens aberrations. The 50D is also vulnerable to severe aliasing/moire in non-crop shots but you can control it better using a wider aperture for shallower DOF - this also helps focus the viewers attention on the subject.

The solution - get a set of ND filters or a good variable ND. You can then set your shutter, aperture and ISO to control the look and the ND will control the light.
