Title: HDR Error 5D MarkIII
Post by: matzemania on May 15, 2015, 12:01:26 PM
Hey,

i normally used the HDR Video with ML on my 5d Mark II. I never had any Problem there - now I have the 5D Mark III and the HDR Video doesn´t work good anymore. I posted a example video:

https://youtu.be/wBXOrG9vz9w

Does anyone know why it doesn´t work anymore? I used the same settings like in the 5D Mark II.

Thank you!

It looks like a postproduction problem. How do you merge and what fps?

I do the same like I did with the Mark II. HDR-Workflow from the Magic Lantern Homepage (with Virtual Dub), then take only the C Frames and import them as JPEG-sequence in Premiere Pro. I also tried to export the video directly from virtual dub as AVI, but it looked the same.
Its 24fps i think.

It looks like the camer does not record one picture ISO AAA and one picture ISO BBB - it loos more like:
AAA AAA BBB AAA BBB AAA AAA AAA BBB BBB -if you know what I mean ;-)
It looks a little bit like shuffle.

HDR shuffle, new feature  :P.
Sorry, have no idea what, s going on.
Maybe find the 5D mk 3 firmware thread, describe in detail and post examples of frames of what is happening?
I use raw HDR recently but work on mac with cr2hdr-r so no good in your case.

Or...

You could figure it out yourself and let all of us know.  That would be best.

Sorry just saw this thread... It looks like you recorded the 5D3 in 24fps during this shoot with HDR?

Have you tried 48, 50 or 60fps?

DId you shoot this in h264 or RAW/MLV?

Sorry for answering now, but I was on tour :)

The Magic Lantern workflow I usw: http://wiki.magiclantern.fm/userguide#hdr_video
I use the user friendly version.

I alsways recors 24fps - I did the same with the MK2 and I had no problems with the HDR Video.

I try on, maybe I find out whats wrong :)

Still the link doesn't exactly tell me which workflow you used for HDR video.

I suggest you to record either 48,50 or 60fps in RAW to get the most of of HDR.

Otherwise you will continue to get that "ghosting" effects because you recorded in 24fps which becomes half'ed (12fps) after post which isn't so pretty after all so I'm not sure what you mean by "no problems" w previous attempts.

You on Mac or PC?

I recorded  with 24fps with the MK2 and I hab no problems...
Iam using PC at work.
Workflow: The program seperates the frames in A, B and C frames - the C frames are the A and B frames merged togehter. Then I import the jpg sequence in premiere CC.
I don´t know what I have to change, because I use the same settings as with the MK2.
I already tried 60fps and I habe the same result.
Don´t know wht to do...

You could upload an example file. Use dropbox or maybe sprend.

What should I upload? Isn´t the youtube Link in the first video not enough?
Here I put together the HDR-file and the finishes file. As you can see it looks still very "ghosty". :(

We need the cam's unprocessed output. Processed files will tell next to nothing about what went wrong.

Here I uloaded the uncompressed file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/860gzd9fp3ei36d/BW2A0362.MOV?dl=0

I downloaded your MOV, downloaded a1ex' "HDR-workflow-051.zip", expanded it to a local disk, installed Avisynth and copied your file as RAW.MOV into main.cmd's directory.
Then opened a command prompt in Windows 8.1, browsed to main.cmd and let it run. I stopped at step "Watch the CMD prompt running enfuse; at the end, VirtualDub will open again with the result.". Result looks ok, IQ aside.
If I let VirtualDub show the result frame-by-frame there is no lost/dark frame.
Do you have different results up to this step?

The clip looks good here. Did you use any warp stabilizer on the footage?
Walter seems to have the solution using virtual dub. Coming from mac I worked with Jerrykils script here
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=8937.msg84599#msg84599
Then interpolated back the frames in AE to 24fps using pixel motion.

First example is with no aligning. Other with aligning which I think is needed to get sharpest results. (Aligning function implemented in Jerrykil script, Mac os X)

I did exactly the same as Walter.
And when I watch it frame by frame, there are still the "ghost" pictures.
I haven´t changed anything in the virtual dub settings.
I have to use the PC at work, so is there another way I can try to get a good HDR result then the "hdr-workflow"?
I will post some screenshots tomorrow.

Thank you all for your help! :)

Take a look into subdir "frames". Dark/empty frames present there? Delete contents of this directory and retry.

I always delete the contents in the frames directory.

Here are screenshots how my single frames look in virtual dub - still ghosty:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ivhirrn6vgee16q/vd-screen_2.PNG?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zuacbgauysswxks/vd-screen_3.PNG?dl=0

But however - thanks to Danne!
After trying some videos the HDSLR Offloader seems so work! Now the videos look good again.
But if the video HDR Video was 10 seconds then after using HDSLR it is 5seconds - so the merged videos are too fast.
Why?

That's basic knowledge: If you use 2 frames to generate one merged you will have your actual frames reduced by 50 percent and therefore half the frame rate.
That's why realtime HDR recording requires double bitrate or something like Twixtor.
Adjust in post.

Yeah but with the other workflow it worked with 24 fps :)

So now I have to record 50fps (how can I shoot 1080p with 50fps without RAW in ML?) HDR video and then I will have the good result I hope.
I tried to adjust it in post (with 24fps) but it looked too shaky when i put it to 50% speed.

Thank you

I seriously doubt you had same fps and duration as recorded after postprocessing with given workflow.

And of course 12 fps is not suited for human eyes by just "stretching" it by 100 percent. I mentioned Twixtor earlier. Danne has used AE with Pixelmotion.

So with the MKII i recorded HDR-Video in 24fps and used the "user friendly workflow".
And the final result was also in 24fps and it looked good.
Twixtor is not free, so its not an option at the moment.
Now the HDSLR Offloader works when i record in 50fps (1280x720). Bute I don´t know how I can record 50fps with 1080p.
I tried with Magic Lantern but the FPS override doesn´t work good for me.

Iam sorry if I understand something wrong, but my English is not the best.  ;)

Now I tried the userfriendly workflow again with the MKII and it worked without any problems - no ghosting and clip is as long as the original.

Moderators can you please move this topic to proper section? Obliviously this one is not about sharing his finished ultra cool video :\
