Title: Lexar 1066x 256gb VS Sandisk Extreme Pro 256GB?
Post by: Gringovisual on April 18, 2015, 08:31:09 AM
Hey ya'll.
So I've scoured through threads related to 256gb CF cards and I can't get a benchmark between the two CF's below.
I want to get a 256gb CF, either the Lexar Professional 1066x 256GB Cf, or the SanDisk Extreme PRO 256GB, since I've heard they are the fastest big CF cards, and have a better track record of reliability than a komputerbay.

So far I've only found a pic of a 64Gb Lexar 1066x CF, and some text of a SanDisk Extreme PRO 256GB, seen below.
(http://i58.tinypic.com/2uym639.jpg)
(http://i61.tinypic.com/2dmi1pc.png)

And these threads don't have benchmarks of the 256gb variants. -

My question is between the SanDisk Extreme PRO 256GB and the Lexar Professional 1066x 256GB , which one is faster? is there a benchmark of the 2?
I film in action sports so sometimes even just a few more seconds of 1920 x 1080 @60p is great. ;D
I run a 5D MK III.
Also, I hear getting a 128gb version instead of a 256gb is going to be marginally faster?

@Gringovisual:

I've got KB 128GB 1066x CF cards and have been happy with them.

I'm also curious about the 256GB cards as well but also heard about the speed differences between 128GB & 256GB plus having to deal with the risk of losing 256GB of footage from a corrupted card doesn't seem ideal to me and are the main reasons why I haven't purchased them.

Still tempting though....

@Deafeyejedi

The reason for me getting the 256gb, is filling up a 64gb card with raw is easy for me in a couple of hours. I film action sports, so sometimes on location im burning through gb's of RAW video and photos, and won't get to offload my footage the same day or later. In the middle of a shoot it would be nice to not have to change a card till the end of the day. Although I've never had a card get corrupt, I already have a 64gb lexar 400x so I think a 256gb would do well with the 64gb providing some kind of "EXTRA" CF protection. With the Komputerbay I see a few issues with speed differences between batches of cards + if you dont use a usb 3.0 udma 7 card reader, it will corrupt the card.

none the less, I'd like to see benchmarks of the 64gb variants if someone can show them.  :)

I understand and yes I do use a USB 3.0 udma 7 card reader (Hoodman USA) which has been serving me well over the past several months with these KB 128GB 1066x CF cards. You got your point about the extra space regarding high speed shoots, though.

Now that's even more tempting... One day I'll order the KB 256GB 1066x sooner rather than later!

I got a Lexar 800x thinking it would outperform the SanDisk Extreme 60 MB/s. Yet, I am still stuck at 48 MB/s. Am I doing something wrong? The Lexar is supposed to go way faster then the SanDisk.

Thanks

Old news. Lexar 800x performance depends on size:
Up to 32 GByte -> Write performance about 46 MByte/s
64 GByte or higher -> Write performance about 78 MByte/s

I must admit I got a 16Gb 800x. Is it even slower? I am returnig this cf card and getting with a SanDisk instead. Now I see why the Sandisk 60 MB/s is twice as much the Lexar 800x other things being equal.

Sorry but this information about Lexar 800x is just old news. Do your research better next time. Lexar 800x 64 GB (or up) is outperforming SanDisk 60 MB/s.

Hello ML world,

I just joined this website to find the same answer the OP seeks. I've been using ML for the past 2-ish years on my T3i and just recently upgraded to the 5Dm3. After hours upon hours of scouring the internet to find the best card to shoot RAW footage, I've given up trying to find benchmark information on 256GB cards (that are not KB). I don't mind splurging for either a Sandisk or Lexar for extra reliability and safety.

Jackie 4CHAN:

Regardless of the brand(s) that you're leaning towards to... just make sure they're at least in speeds of 1066x since that seems to be the sweet spot for 5D3.

Yikes... TBH with you I personally think it's ridiculously overpriced and Sandisk usually sell their 'name' regardless of its performance.

I'm saving up to get the KB 256GB 1066x since it's literally half the price from the one that you're about to order...  ::)

Be sure to BM it first thing you received it before using it to verify its speeds.

...and to run h2testw or F3 to verify its size.

@Walter Schulz:

I've been doing all the BM's in camera within ML (which I don't mind) -- however in the past I've tried locating a working copy of F3 but it doesn't seem to be anywhere online since it may be 'out of date' or am I missing something?

These links seems not to be working...

http://oss.digirati.com.br/f3/

Seems like the link which takes to github to download is down or missing?

Thanks.

I've read a lot of threads with you raving about how good KB has treated you, but I just ordered 4 KB cards last week and 2 of them were duds from the get go. My first experience with them scared me enough to never want to try again. What's worse is KB charges a %15 restocking fee because I want a refund instead of a replacement.... so you know, that's fun to deal with.

Doesn't bother me paying for the peace in mind a more reputable name like Sandisk can provide because that cost will trickle down to clients. I'll post this weekend with the benchmark.

Jedi should I try 128GB 1066 KB? you're right it is almost half of Sandisk.

I have 64 GB 160 Sandisk that cost me $150 a year ago from B&H.

Do you think it's worth giving a shot?

Lol I mean will it work?

I see KB post benchmark that shows 120mb/s write speed from 5D3...isnt the camera limited to 100mb/s? At least this is what Canon confirms. How you can get +20mb ?

Magic Lantern!

Okay, seriously: It's what Canon gives us to use. And kudos to Canon for not going into "166.6 MByte/s guaranteed transfer speed!*" marketing lingo ...

* Valid only on February 29th in odd years while Venus transits during solar eclipse.

EDIT: Any link for Canon stating 100 MByte/s is the limit?

Kudos to Canon indeed..but its hard to lie now that the ML experts are messing deep with their camera :) i'v sent mails both to KB support and Canon Europe almost 2 years ago (when Aug.14 build was released) and they confirmed both that the camera write limit is 100mb/s...i cant find those mails as its been too long and must have been deleted..
Its in the playback mode that benchmarks go 110-120mb/s while in movie they reach 88-92mb.

Maximum transfer rate in benchmarks for 5D3 is 150+ MByte/s (read, of course) and that's only possible in UDMA-7 mode (UDMA-7: 167 MByte/s; UDMA-6: 133 MByte/s). 100 MByte/s would be UDMA-5's maximum transfer rate.

yes i know theoretically udma7 support write speed up to 150mb/s...something i havent seen practically yet (i could only reach 113mb write speed with 64 Lexar 1066x in CrystaDisc)...what it matters anyway is that atm we can only use 90mb/s max when rec. video with ML...i hope ML will support future cameras with higher speed
