I don't understand your objection. You seem to be advocating GPL for them, and he is correctly pointing out that GPL's share-alike requirement would kill their prospects among mainstream tools. BSD's non-copyleft approach makes them viable in the mainstream. That strategy looks sound but you seem to be crying foul over "freedom and community" platitudes, but without a cogent explanation.
