Title: 7D battery using motion detect (frame difference)
Post by: Royward on October 15, 2014, 07:19:10 AM
I've been testing the 7D battery to see how the charge lasts using ML motion detect (frame difference) and with the power saving feature
set to sensor =off LV = off.
The result was a little disappointing as the charge only lasted 2 hours during which the camera took 60 photos (RAW), manual focus. The good news is that the camera stayed cool.

What did you expect form keeping the camera in live view? that fast that you don't have anything on screen and it is not updated does not mean that sensor is not read constantly, Think of it as taking pictures all the time and just saving the ones you need.

OK. Thanks. The menu option is a bit confusing. It says that LV and sensor are turned off in power saving mode. What you say makes sense.

When the sensor has something to do (record a video or capture frames for motion detection), it's not turned off (ML will print "Display off" instead of "Display and sensor off").

You are welcome to suggest a better help text that would explain these subtleties in 2x60 characters.

Many thanks. I'll have a look at the wording when I get back next week.
