Title: Mavricks and Card Readers
Post by: Lasting Image on October 14, 2014, 01:12:17 AM
Does anyone have a recommendation for a CF card reader using a 2011 PowerBook with Mavricks?

Powerbook it´s an old model. Even without USB 2.0.
If you refer to macbook, you can buy a Trascend. USB 2 and 3.0 SD andCF reader-writer.
Cheap accessory.

...geeeezzzz. I think I'm stuck in the 90's.  Yes, meant MacBook Pro.

Thanks for the tip.  I have looked at the Transcend (  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/815153-REG/Transcend_TS_RDF8K_USB_3_0_Multi_Card.html ) but haven't found anything that says it will work with Mavericks. I'm leaning towards the Kingston (  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ES0YYA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ) but there's no guarantee the ones on the shelf are the newer versions that will work with Mavericks. (there's an online firmware upgrade for the Kingston but you need a windows PC to install it - don't have one)  So I was curious if anyone knew of a reader that's a for-sure fit off the shelf with OS X Mavericks.

Don't you have someone with a Windows PC nearby?

Simple devices like card readers should work out of the box with every platform.

FYI, I have a usb3 transcend card reader and it works fine (ootb) with OS X and Windows. I haven't tried it on Linux, but I'm sure it'll work there as well.

Thanks everyone.
I've tried two different 2.0 CF readers.  Neither work. What I've found is that a number of manufacturers will say "works with 10.x.x or later" but don't update their information when a new OS is released. That's why I'm hesitant on the Transcend. I haven't found anything, yet, mentioning Mavericks specifically.  ... and nope, no Windows nearby. Bunch of mac heads around here (listening to 90's music) -- small town.

The 2011 MacBook models did not have USB 3.0 ports as far as I know - a USB 3.0 reader should still work; but you will not get the full speed.

I have used this one for a number of years on both a 2012 MacBook Air and a 2013 MacBook Pro. It works fine in Mavericks and Yosemite.

Excellent. Thanks.  I also found this ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0062EUE54/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=ianker-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B0062EUE54 ) Their website says it works with Mavericks.  Anyone have experience with this reader?

To follow up --

I got the Lexar Dual Slot USB 3.0 Reader Professional LRW307URBNA

The one I received from Amazon works great with Mavericks.
It's of solid construction. Much better than the other readers I've had.
I live in a dusty environment. This card reader is designed to keep the card slot clean. That by itself is WELL worth the extra (minimal) cost. Dust bunnies don't stand a chance of taking me down, suffocating my digital thoughts.
