Title: BETTER OPTION THAN RAW2CDNG?
Post by: zacshome on July 28, 2014, 02:47:16 AM
Hey guys, I have been using RAW2CDNG recently for small personal projects, decided to use it on a club night event.

Shot 800gb total, come to transcoding it and RAW2CDNG just keeps having fatal errors etc. there is always a clip somewhere that screws it up, if i do like.. 10 files at a time its ok, but that means i have to constantly be there being a parent to the program.. is there something more reliable out there that will just skip clips that wont work and wont just die on me that I can run all night?

I AM USING WINDOWS i7 950, 580 phantom 3gb + 32gb ram 64bit...sadly still on usb2... reckon it would be faster on usb 3? ANYWAY THIS IS MY ISSUE...please.. any help would be much appreciated as this is slowing my down and making me question this workflow considerably.

(i may have accidentally posted this in raw to, i havent slept in days and kinda tripping balls as the determination to be the best kinda outways sleep )

What version are you using ?
I use raw2cdng v1.4.9 seem to work Ok on large file input , but I have not tried it with 800GB.
How many file are you talking about ?
MLV v2.0 or Raw v1.0 ? I always convert mlv to raw and exact the raw though raw2cdng.
There is other extracting software "MlRawViewer 1.1.7 (RAW/MLV/CDNG viewer/converter, Linux/Mac/Win)" http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9560.msg91165#msg91165
but I don't think it support Cdng export thou but a very nice piece of software .

I am shooting raw 1.0, dont need audio and it seems more stable from my own small personal projects. yeah..it is a bit annoying converting 10 files at a time.. some files need to be done individually too

I don't use MLV but "standard" Raw and for conversion raw2cdng. Never had an issue. But copy files from your CF to hard disk first.

@zacshome
can you deliver informations about the files, that are crashing raw2cdng? did you opened them with fi HxD or tried with another tool, just to be sure, the files are ok? what version are you using? there have been memory leaks till beta6, leading to crashes.

(and yes, i'll do a skip option on broken files. good idea)

It just crashes when I put a bunch of clips into it then click on it again or try and scroll through them or even remove a clip that has been added. It kinda kills me :( On a side note.. really trying to figure out the difference between a cdng and a Dng..

(a1) never wrote code to remove items from the list (so, will take that as a note to implement it)
(a2) vertical banding is on my list, but its more in my life than only coding a tool. sry.
its free, thats my gift to the community.

(b) difference between cdng and dng? some video-oriented tags inside the file.
but: my claim was a simple 12/16 bit converter for premiere.
did you tried raw2dng or mlv_dump?
or some GUIs for these tools?

Hey dude, thanks for ya time. i used raw2dng wayyyy back, then started using raw2cdng as soon as i went back to playing with raw about 6 months ago. this is the first time i am really playing with it properly as I dont want to bust out 24k for an f5 just yet :) but i want to get used to working with raw and having a bit more fun.

I understand that dng is 10bit or 12bit? one of the two, which is 2bit off 14 which is what the raw data is. So the cdng just gives you that bit extra to work with yeah?

dng can be 14, 16 and 28bit as well. it was my aim to write a converter that spits out compatible (usual video-bitdepths) as 12 or 16bit. mlv_dump is able to convert to 16bit as well - and you get your anti-verticalbanding. finally, i think, you wont see/feel the difference between 12 and 14bit. (sidenote. DFM mentioned, actually only my 16bit-cdng's -maximized with delta pink highlights- look right in premiere. have to refine the code)

and of course i want to help and patch these crashes, but you have to help as well. maybe with a debug-log, a screenvideo you are describing, what you do and so on. maybe you've got a file, thats faulty or not recognised properly by raw2cdng, send it to me ([email protected]).

(would be good to collect those things in the according thread (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5618.0))

On Windows is there any solution that currently syncs WAV and MLV->DNG Sequences in Davinci Resolve? I had been using RawMagic on OSX and it did this automatically and saved me a ton of time as I typically am shooting hundreds of files multiple days/week. Linking manually is a slow process, would be great if it was all automatic like with RawMagic.
