I'm looking into either buying or making a camera cage. I want it to be more to protective of the camera than to mount tons of things onto it. To give you a size reference; I have a canon t3i with a battery grip and I will most commonly be using my Tokina 12-24, and a shotgun style mic that would either need to fit inside the cage or be mounted on the top. Any info/experience you have would be really appreciated!

While not specifically a camera cage, I built a modular camera rails system using a design from one of ML's members, Ted Ramasola. You can see his design on his webpage: http://www.ramasolaproductions.com/5.html
After looking around at all the other DIY projects, this one was more difficult and a bit pricey, but the results are very good and very professional. The beauty of the modular rails system is you can set it up in a ton of different ways and mount just about anything in one way or another. The only thing I would have done differently is used true 15mm rails. It would have cost more, but now that I'm looking at some accessories, 15mm compatibility would have been nice.

If budget is not an issue, go for the wooden camera cage. Solid, light weight and compact. Will set you back by about US$700. :)
Yes wooden cages are best but price is little high. Cheap option is Proaim camera Cage. I am using Proaim Rapido camera cage working pretty well with my canon, quality is well built and securely protect my camera. And also having a mounting option.

Look up the filmcity cage. About $75 I think. No experience, I've just seen it.

Honestly, I am using Proaim Rapido cage, don't have any experience with other cages. My rapido cage is working perfect with my Camera, quality is also good.
