We've just completed our beta build of MLV Mystic, a Windows/Mac based GUI MLV/RAW to DNG batch converter.
It is a lightweight converter built upon g3ggo, a1ex and hudson's mlv_dump and raw2dng code.
We are happy to be able to share this converter with the magic lantern community, and hope you will weigh in with your suggestions, requests, or experience of bugs so we can make this software awesome and tailor it to best help the community.

An interesting program but I think I found a bug in the user interface. If I click "vertical Stripes fix (5d3)" I get stripes in the pictures and if I uncheck the button I don´t get any stripes. I think this should be fixed.
I could not get this app to do anything on my windows 7 u4 bit system. It would always hang/freeze and not respond after selecting files and then Convert.

Gary, the latest build was actually made on a windows 7 64 bit system. Could you give me any specifics on the files you are converting and the version of magic lantern you're running?

It's not possible to solve the vertical strips for the 7D ?
Just test it this morning (i'm in France) and it works very good (MLV + sound) with a 5D mark2 / 14 feb firmware version (a_d)
Windows 7 64bits.
It's fast, simple to use and efficient.
Just what I need to work effectively on a Pro. production

I have the M camera, I use the latest TL nightly builds, so I have Feb11th when I tried it. I shoot MLV movies , 1280x720 16x9 24fps crop mode. No audio can be used on the M as of this time.

What I would really love however is if this app could convert to CDNG instead of DNG. Premiere Pro can identify and playback CDNG, but not plain old DNG files.
Any possibility of that being implemented?

Really cool! Tried it on my mac works good. Audio gets extracted together with dng;s. The IDX files are place outside the folder, maybe supposed to. Never found out what to use the idx files for.
Tried with raw and works as usual converting files smaller than 4gb. Spanned files makes the converter crash.
Suggestion to be able to save exported folders to a personally chosen location.

One thing I'd appreciate is having the metadata dumped to a file as an option, like I was doing in my "app" here (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9731). I was finding it incredibly useful to be able to track focus distance, time, etc in there.

Are you planning to implement DualISO movie processing? That would be the great feature.
Error help: The program cannot run because the Qt5core.dll file is missing. But I can see it in the directory. Also, once I extract the files and click on MLVMystic, I am asked to reinstall. Is this normal.
@Canon eos m : This sounds like a permissions error. Where are you extracting your files to? Try extracting the project to your desktop or public folder and running from there.
@kgv5 : We hadn't played around with DualISO too much in the past, but it seems really interesting so definitely possible. We will start testing it out in alpha stages as soon as we get the chance.
@arrinkiiii : The vertical banding is done by correcting luma amplification and not related back to the noise levels as with dark frame subtraction. Here is the write up from the code

@Midphase : CDNG is not part of our current plans. However, we will take a look into the format and see if it would be possible to integrate into our system.

I covert the mlv file but do not see any audio file, is there some sort of trick i don't know about?

How are you getting this through resolve? I've used mlvmystic to create the dogs... but once in resolve the audio doesn't sync properly (have to manually do it... which for hundreds of clips would take forever)... but mostly, resolve simply does not want to export dngs that are created by mlvmystic
As for Resolve: frankly it's the first version that works for me.... at all. Before, it just crashed. So I'm really not the person to ask as I'm really new to it. Syncing I will probably do in Final Cut, because a prores proxy just works quicker than going trough dng files. And if you have a lot of clips, it a job, but it's not endless. It just depends on how much the footage is worth to you and if you get enough time for delivery (and perhaps have an assistant?).
For now, I also prefer the color I get with ACR for onlining files, but it looks to be much slower.
I'm just very happy that we have these options now. It's becoming a real palette of processes.
Chroma smoothing selection would be awesome feature for EOS-M users, can't wait!

the best option is to use raw2cdng build by chime if u use premiere pro. u can import cdng into premiere pro which all audio are in sync automatically. i make short films and its not possible to sync thousands of clips with audio manually
This works great on Mac, I was wondering if there could be an option to select what folder the DNGs are exported to? It currently just dumps it in the same folder as the source, so it can't really be used when converting directly off the memory cards.
Thanks so much for making this available! I may be missing something but while everything seems to be working fine, the resulting DNG files are not viewable in OSX or in PS or in FCPX whereas the DNGs that come out of RAWMagic are viewable. Is this because they're DNG rather than CDNG files or am I doing something wrong? If I use MLV Mystic to convert the MLV files to RAW files and then use RAWMagic to convert those I get viewable DNGs but that seems like a silly, roundabout process to have to go through. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
To expand on arrinkiiii on Cinema DNG's. In premiere they render out effects much faster (around 3x faster) so many people would greatly appreciate that update.
Ps. This is for people that use the dynamic link from AE to PP to view DNG's. It's a very practical workflow and a ton of people use it. Thanks.

Would it be possible to have a check box option to format the output of the file names so they are compliant with DaVinci Resolve?
By this I mean using the naming convention that allows the files to be directly browsed with a thumbnail image for the folder when you browse in Resolve.
an example of the Resolve 'compliant' formatting is this: -
/M15-0121_C0000/M15-0121_C0000_000308.dng
I'm not saying this naming convention should be adopted; but it would really help to make life easier when using DaVinci Resolve. So having a checkbox for compliant file name/structure for resolve would be super useful!

@NChaparro Make sure you have the MLV Sound module loaded and enabled and the option in you ML sound menu is set to ON.
@redfitz We have encountered only one such experience where we had to remove all traces of the software files and re-install. Give that a test, if not it may be a version compatibility error.
@mageye & Midphase We will try to include Resolve compliance for the next version.

Hey All,
Wanted to share a inconsistency / glitch I found using MLV Mystic. I have been getting some glitch frames (pink scramble, pictured below) when converting from MLV Raw format straight to DNG. When I run MLV Dump run from Terminal reaches the first bad frame it stops and reads "[ERROR] File ends in middle of a block". MLV Mystic powers through these frames but in final DNG folder, I am getting multiple frames with the overwhelming pink glitch scramble.
I just tried exporting a RAW from MLV Mystic and then converting with RAW2DNG.app and now MANY of the pink glitch frames seem to be normal. However, I am now getting a broken, half black frame where the first pink glitch occurred.
I do think that this is a in camera ML problem, getting some sort of recording issue but it appears that the problem is much worse when using Mystic to go straight to DNG instead of the 2 step I described above.
I am using a VERY recent ML build (Feb 28thish) | Komputerbay 64GB 1050X (shot two other projects in stock h264 with no corruptions or problems) and Regular Canon Battery
Anyone else having problems with these type of fully messed up pink frames or half blacked out frames with current ML and Mystic workflow?

I tried deleting the only files I could find which was simply the application that I'd copied to my Applications folder. I then re-downloaded the file and installed it again to my applications folder and converted a file with the same result as before.
blakekimmel, I had the same errors in the image. Very latest built (three days ago), and all the files were corrupt like this.
is it possible to convert to raw without creating folder for each clips so that i can select all raw files at once without having to open every folder? it wil be much easier and save a lot of time if i can have all raw files in one folder so that i can open that folder and select all raw files at once to drag and drop in raw2cdng or pink dot remover.

for me it says "not responding" too, but working on the background, after a while a finish window pops up -> try to do it with only one file selected and wait a bit

Other thing:
Is there a limit? I sent trough 52 mlv files in the program, but the first 8 was only an empty folder. Not a real problem, since then i put these 8 files in the batch again, and then it worked. But i encountered this issue multiple times now.

@czdodo We will be implementing a workaround that will hopefully alleviate the app hanging in the next release. We also expect it to lessen the current issues with the progress bar and skipped files. These all will be given a more thorough debugging for future versions.

Thank you. Since then I tested it again, and the app seems to do around 50 MLV files, and the rest is only empty folders. It's not a real problem, since you can load the other half again. I just tought to point it out, hopefully it helps :)
50 files. I just had that too today.
I'm still unable to generate any viewable DNGs with the program. I've tried deleting all references to it and re-installing and have done so on two different computers, each running the latest version of OSX.

For me it seems like it's about half of the .DNGs that gets processed correctly, and the other half is corrupted. ACR can't open them, bridge or finder won't create a thumbnail.

I'm shooting MLV on a 5DIII. I thought perhaps it could have something to do with the particular nightly build I'm using of ML but I can convert the MLV files to RAW files and then use RAWMagic to convert them into viewable DNGs.
i remember there was a cold pixel fix for the 600D in g3ggo 's build. was that ported over to this software?
@redfitz You could be right, It may simply be a clash of conversion algorithm and build version. Perhaps an older nightly build might get you better results. We did use g3gg0's mlv_dump as the basis for our code, but since the mlv format is still in beta and being constantly updated there might be times when things go out of sync. In our subsequent update we will do a complete update of the conversion code to incorporate all of the ML teams updates.
@filo99 This fix was incorporated after our initial build, and as such will not be available until we overhaul our code to match the ML teams latest. With any luck it won't take too long, but wont be available until our subsequent release.
Tried about every app for the Mac... Running MBP Retina with a Mavericks and a 5D III... This is the only post-processor that eliminates the vertical stripes. Can't say enough how great the results are. It's such a privilege. Thanks for developing this application.
The program always brings up the spinning ball of death when processing footage... I've never tried to convert the footage without vertical stripes... Not sure if that is the culprit. But anyway, the program doesn't actually fail. It is continuing to process footage... Which brings me to the point... The spinning ball finally doesn't bother me a bit. How long have we all waited for the spinning ball to not be a problem? What a fix for the 5D III and for Apple! :-)

IS there a plan to allow outputting to a certain folder on the hard disk, instead of simply placing the new DNG folder in the same place as the original MLV file? Basically so we could go straight from the CF card and output to our hard disk, without having to transfer the whole CF card to disk then converting... Thanks for making it easier to work with MLV..
I still can't get it to work on my mac, maybe 5-10% are correctly processed and then the remaining 90% gives files that are corrupted and not able to open in ACR / PS / any other program.

Because of space and time being what they are, we've found it's most efficient to simply transcode off a card directly to DNGs on the hard drive. With MLV Mystic we can't select an output directory which would enable this workflow for MLV. Hope you add this feature very soon as we're in the middle of a 2.5 week doc shooting all Canon RAW! Would love to add audio scratch track to our process. Thanks.
After I convert an MLV file to DNG, If I delete the DNGs and want to trans code the MLV file again, MLV Mystic won't let me. It basically just creates an empty directory with no DNGs in it. Does this have anything to do with the index? How do I avoid this?

Updated the 5D III to a 1.2.3 firmware. With this firmware MLV became far too unstable to continue to use. I switched to RAW and decided to stick with 1.2.3. However, after using RAW on the 5D III, I have noticed that Mystic is not actually removing the vertical stripes in the RAW tab, but it will in the MLV tab. FYI: Mystic is the only application to properly eliminate the vertical lines and remove stuck pixels with my particular camera and Macbook Pro combination.

Nice work on this. exporting raw and mlv works fine and also CR2 dual iso files! Really cool.
Got curious about the dual iso(ALPHA) in the mlv section to see if checking it would give me ability to export a dual iso movie file DNG. It does convert and it takes longer obviously in the process but it can,t be opened in acr as is the case converted with A.D OSX_cr2hdr.app. Is this a known issue in this early stage? Would be awesome to have a dual iso movie converter. It would also be nice if the dual iso movie conversion could be done with .raw as well.

Hey Danne,
I've come across this issue recently and it seems to stem from some of the older code which I will be updating for my next release. I will tell you that I have been able to fully convert some Dual ISO MLV's and open the finished product. Perhaps I will post my settings soon so that if people want to emulate they can give it a go.
RAW Dual ISO might be a great idea, I'll try to fit it in for the next update.

Weird bug in Mac: if you select chroma smoothing you then can't deselect chroma smoothing/no smoothing radio buttons.
Hey dub,
not being able to deselect is a side effect of making the buttons auto-exclusive, so for now selecting no smoothing is the same as having nothing selected. Perhaps i should make no smoothing selected by default, but otherwise I haven't thought of any smart workarounds yet.

The program won't do anything on my windows 7 64bit when trying to convert MLVs. When I press convert it just says "Your conversion is complete" right away.. and it only made a folder at the output destination.
Is there something I'm missing?

@Daniel: if you right click on the app and show the package contents then you can see the programs terminal window by going to : Contents/MacOS/MLVMystic
If you do a conversion with this terminal window open then a detailed report of what the program is doing will be print out there.
@Nautilus: I haven't found a method for CDNG yet that I like. I might be swayed to include it if I come across one, but it's not a main focus.
RAW Conversion uses a different algorithm than MLV, so it would take some time to replicate the options for RAW and Mystic is intended as mainly an MLV converter.

Thanks a lot for your work on this tool! Easing the raw workflow is really one of the most important areas for unleashing the potential of magiclantern.
I'm really on thin ice here, so forgive me if I'm thinking wrong. But my dream for this workflow would be to directly convert MLV into (compressed) CDNG (as @Nautilus mentioned). Reducing the file size, including audio elegantly, and having native file support within premiere would be insane! (and from what Adobe are blogging, they continiously work an enhancing the CDNG support/BlackMagic camera support (http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2014/04/thenextpremiereproccrelease.html)).
I would gladly donate for such tool, but I also understand this might be impossible..

I gotta say, this is the only tool I've actually gotten WORKING reliably. The UI is a bit clunky, but it reminds me of how easy it was to use RAWMAGIC before MLV.

Thanks a lot for your work on this tool! Easing the raw workflow is really one of the most important areas for unleashing the potential of magiclantern.
I'm really on thin ice here, so forgive me if I'm thinking wrong. But my dream for this workflow would be to directly convert MLV into (compressed) CDNG (as @Nautilus mentioned). Reducing the file size, including audio elegantly, and having native file support within premiere would be insane! (and from what Adobe are blogging, they continiously work an enhancing the CDNG support/BlackMagic camera support (http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2014/04/thenextpremiereproccrelease.html)).
I would gladly donate for such tool, but I also understand this might be impossible..

I just checked, it is there, really! After clicking the link in the first post on the first page here in this thread, I was taken to another page and I scrolled a little and I found the option to download for Windows or Mac.
This are only my own needs but I hope it could be usefull.
1. Dialog like "Save as..." where we can set directory for DNG files (not the same as MLV directory). Tried to convert right from my full CF card and got error :)
2. Checkbox like "Create directories for each take/scene/mlv". Sometimes (everytime) I don't need many directories with DNG files. Sometimes I want them all in one directory.
3. Wanna see progress bar while application converting.

finally able to register and I've been trying the program myself and lovin it however i've experienced the same as Mario here from way back regarding the stripes when i check the vertical stripe fix. Is there a fix to this i may have missed out? :P
The vertical stripes the fix is referring to are the oftentimes visible vertical bands in 5dm3 yes? I have been reading up on it and it's such a downer. Just hoping its not my sensor even though ive been reading many concerns about it. Hoping the "fix" can help address it if at all possible.

Well, the latest version worked for me. Tried with .MLV (with and without sound) and .RAW, stripe fix; chroma smoothing and it worked for me. On the other hand the progress bar doesn't work. Although didn't try dual ISO. Maybe the problem comes from there.

I just took a look at your software package, and you say it's built upon our tools, mlv_dump and raw2dng. It also seems to include code from cr2hdr, not 100% sure.
Since your program is not just a simple GUI that executes our binaries as I thought initially, you are required to share your source code under GPL, as discussed here (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=11879.0).

Sooo.. is this a dead program or are any updates coming?
Using chroma smoothing 2x2 results in colored dots (mainly blue) coming up in very dark areas if they are lifted. No problems without color smoothing on 5d Mark III.

Just get the nightly, enable the modules, enable sound recording. There you go. RAW + Sound.

I created a folder for my destination called "test". After hitting convert the software says complete. I have recorded on Lexar 128gb. And in exfat. Thankful for help. I have mavericks 10.9.3.

*I found that when I try to save my export into a very deep folder structure, sometimes it makes blank folders.
So when that happens I export them straight to the desktop.
*I have also had blank folders when the actual MLV files are buried to deep into folders too.
*And sometimes it just does not work :)
-MIRawviewer is an excellent tool, try that one! That is what I use for all my MLV files now.
It is great having the option to see/playback all the MLV`s first, hear the sound, set in out points and then add them to render que for export! :D
(or "son of batch" is another one)

I have not got Mlraw viewer to work yet. Have you installed other software than the Mlrawviever itself?

I just came to a sad realisation... If this little piece of software (MLVMystic) will not be further (publicly) developed it might have something to do with licensing. I have read this thread and many more with endless discussions on trying to mitigate the effort put into the ML project by its creators and others contributing and/or benefiting from it.
Therefore, I don't know if the sudden silence of @GTempler has something to do with the reply by @a1ex - it would be nice to know.
I wonder if there will ever be an easy tool (supported, updated, working...) to convert RAW / MLV files without vertical stripes from the 5D MKIII - which really is the camera I suppose you want to use with ML.
I'm sure many, myself included, would gladly pay for the post processing software and ML itself. I understand that there are complex issues involved but there is a clear need for this software, not just to play around with raw, but also to use it in production.

What is the difference between Dng and Cdng? I use raw2cdng atm but the vertacle stripes is hurting me, looking at running this, would you use this over raw2cdng? is it that dng is for adobe and cdng is for resolve? this has always baffled me.
Actually, this is the only app which I, ve found that converts dual iso movie files best and in a convenient way. I, d love too see it maintained.

Does the updated MLV Mystic use the CR2HDR20bit algo from Alex?
Tested out latest beta -- with dual ISO enabled and the converted DNG's are not recognized by any of the Adobe programs...
Anyone else experience this as well?
Could this be due to black/white levels not being applied?

Is this still necessary for the 7D? The MLRawViewer vertical stripe fix doesn't do this.
I'm also getting an unrecognized file error in LR when importing MLV Mystic converted Dual ISO DNGS as well.
Is there a specific reason for any of the Adobe apps to NOT regconize the converted DNG's from the latest beta of MLVMysic?
I also tried importing the converted DNG's through Raw2Dng to see if it would solve the issues by applying the black/white levels but no luck yet so far...

If I try to convert 100++ files (like 700 files).. It doesn't finish the task even if waiting.
So I tried to convert like 90 files at once!
And after a while, It goes like "Your conversion is now complete" without converting any files :(
I guess this is why ML does not support MLVmystic at the moment or am I wrong?
@slasheal -- are you trying to covert MLV/RAW footage and/or Dual-ISO's?
Only .MLV files taken with silent.mo module.

So I have 738 .mlv files to convert.
First pass:
Only 97 converted.
Second pass, I close and launch again MLVmystic, and select 07 to 700 filles.
Convert again:
Converted to file 194.
I repeat the process until I finish:
Converted to 291.
Then to 388
So.. yes.. there's a software limitation to 97 files.
Please remove it :(

Perhaps @dmilligan's MLVFS is definitely on the fly... Worth to check out!

Wrong, Mystic is now complying with gpl and can be supported here (whether anyone is available to do so is another question).
Thx @Frank7D I still have the app. Now I'm that I'm 'told' ML supports it -- Will use it more to test out for bugs/etc...?!
(I doubt that it is, right @a1ex? anyway plus there are better options out there)

@slasheal -- MLVFS is an amazing, remarkable app.. Please take a deep dive on the instructions before using it. It's rather quite easy, really.
Another problem:
On the DNG file, the shutter speed is stuck at 1s when above 1s.
Whilein the .log fil, the info is correct.
For exampl, MLV shot at 3s shutter speed, will show a DNG with 1s shutter speed.
While the .log file will show 3s shutter speed.
MLVFS works perfectly for video.
But here, I'm talking about singles frames.
On frame per mlv file.
And I don't know why, but with MLVFS, I see nothing inside the folder of my MLV files.
Plus, it creates one dirrectory per MLV file.
When you have 700+ mlv file, it's not very efficient for stills :).

I tried and it works.
It makes multiple MLV files ONLY IF put on "take picture like crazy".
So I have put it on "1s". No problem with a 10s exposure.
I have done this..
But for a 10sec exposure, it will still give me a 1s info instead of 10s info.
.log file give a correct exposure while .dng file is wrong.
LRtimelapse reads DNG file info.. So exposure ajustement is biased.
Edit:
I tried with MLV dump and I have the same exact problem.
So the problem isn't MLVmystic.
Still, the 97 files limitation is a problem.

I just tried to import into After Effects and got an error, but then I noticed that there is a .wav file in the batch folder. I removed it and viola! Works like a charm. (AE version CC 2014)

I'm sorry if this was already asked but any chance of having multithreading, it would be the only feature that could bring me away from MLRV. :)
You can copy the app and run those copies in parallell if you like. That will multithread. If you,re on mac there is also cr2hdr-r workflow.

Not sure what's going on when I convert my 5D Mark III MLV files using MLVMystic I find that there are numerous DNG frames missing in all folders. When I import them in Davinci Resolve I get a whole bunch of split takes of the same video do to the missing DNG's. Has anybody experience that before?
Do you have frame skipping turned off?

You should try extracting with mlv_dump binary. It usually is the safest bet if frames are missing.

Q: How do I seperate the two iso files? So I get to clean DNG folders and not getting missing frames in AE.

dngs are just great files, enought to reach the quality I need in my productions, in my workflow.

Great. It uses mlv_dump_on_steroids, branch from bouncyball and it got the good stuff like cdng metadata, complete set of matrices etc. Also works with lossless, 10/12 bits etc...

I found a copy of MLV Mystic from 2014. I am not sure whether or not it is the latest version but it works with 14-bit RAW and MLV files just fine. I have packed it in a .RAR archive that you can download from here:

As far as ease and speed of operation is concerned, I strongly recommend MLVFS as suggested by Danne. It saves a lot of disk space too. All you need to do is to copy your MLV files into a directory called MLVFS on your hard drive. Then, when you start the software (one click) it mounts all your MLVs from that directory into virtual folders with cDNG files that you can open with Resolve or whatever software you use in the same way as regular DNG folders created by MLV Mystic. In the MLVFS thread there is also a video tutorial on the installation by Reddeercity. Try it! You will be surprised how well MLVFS works and how much time and disk space it saves. It works with losslessly compressed as well as 10 and 12-bit files too.
