Title: Laptop to unload and review 5D MKIII RAW footage
Post by: murdoc on February 06, 2014, 02:13:51 PM
I'm planning to buy laptop that has these specs:

1.7 GHz Intel Core i5-3317U
4GB DDR3 (can't be updated)
256GB SSD
Intel HD Graphics 4000

Is this powerful enough to review RAW footage? I'm not planning to do any editing.

I'm using a similar one, I just need to throw in an SSD since the 5400 RPM drive is a huge bottle neck. I'm able to review CDNG in Premiere in real time, so it should also work with MLViewer. Keep in mind, it won't open Resolve.

Specs seem kinda low. It will work but you'll be frustrated.

What components do you suggest that the laptop should have? I don't want to buy anything over the top, but just something that works ok so I can review the clips and shots on the set and copy the video files to USB HDD's.

A lot of the real-time debayer apps leverage the GPU, so maybe some sort of nVidia mobile GTX?

Also, 4Gb of ram is really low by today's standards.

My setup which I have used successfully for DIT on several films now is a quad core i7 running at 2.6ghz with 16Gb Ram, SSD drive, and nVidia GeForce GTX650 mobile with 1Gb of vRam.

Even with that much power, running Resolve for conversion to ProRes is a bit of a trying experience.
