hi.. there seems to be a problem.. Few days ago, when I imported my .raw files to raw2cdng 1.6.5, it showed me AWB (autowhite balance?) and it set the temperature to 4500 for all .raw files. I carried on with that along with my .mlv files, which got extracted fine (showed the temperature that i shot with).

Now, my .mlv files too show in the tool that the temperature is 4500 AWB.. This was not the temperature i set while shooting.

other .mlv files in other folders are each opening with some temperatures like 5800, 5000 etc.,. Each folder/shooting location has its own temperature shown for all the files contained in it. Is this how it will be? or am i doing something wrong?

Kharak

You are converting to CinemaDNG RAW. I really don't think it matters what white balance you set it to in Camera or how they are converted out, you can always change the WB before you actually start working on footage.

For in camera WB, its nice to set it somewhere close to what you believe is the right WB when shooting, but only for shooting preferences, the beauty of RAW is that you don't have to care about WB, you can set it to 12000K or 2000K, it doesn't affect the final image.
once you go raw you never go back

Hi all,

chmee, thank you for your efforts and results. I'd like to put raw2cdng in my workflow and there is just an element I'd like to understand:

I am using 1.6.5 version and trying to understand how to solve some vertical banding issues: in order to reduce vertical banding, should the "vertical banding" button be green or white?

I am asking because when the button is white I get absolutely better results than when it is green. When the button is green, vertical banding is very strong.

I am also comparing the results with MLRawViewer's output and I tink that banding in this MLRV is almost absent (with banding reduction on).

I'd really like to pass to raw2cdng since I find it more stable and I see you are still developing it.

Thank you. Cheers.

chmee

would be fine you send me an example of yours to inspect it. (use mlvdiag from my site to extract first 55mb from this example and send it to [email protected]) - you re not the first one and it seems its really necessary to change some code ;)

by the way, as every version, please some patience, i'm recoding the file-read-function to get faster transcoding straight from cf-card.. thanks

ok. here s a 1.6.9.ALPHA DO NOT USE FOR PRODUCTION PURPOSES!
Download 1.6.9.alpha

(*) by now it only can transcode single MLV - not stripped files. (!) no raw(!)

-- Fixes/Patches --
(*) modelname, if not found/wrong in mlv, will be recreated from colormatrix-values @Walter_Schulz
(*) fps-tag - dropped frames are now well-formed (25000/1001 instead of 24975/1000)
(*) massive speed up on transcoding straight from cf-card/hdd

-- cf-card(usb3.0) to ssd - 2GB file (1.6.5 ~3min, 1.6.9 ~30seconds) 6x faster

-- hdd to hdd - 2GB file (1.6.5 ~34.9sec, 1.6.9 ~9.5sec) more than 3x faster
-- same hdd read write (1.6.5 ~32.4sec, 1.6.9 ~10.8 seconds) 3x faster
-- hdd to ssd - 2GB file (1.6.5 ~23.5sec, 1.6.9 ~11.5sec) 2x faster

-- ssd(ntfs) to ssd(exfat) - same 2GB file (1.6.5 ~10.1sec, 1.6.9 ~10.9sec) 8% slower (look beneath!)
-- ssd(exfat) to ssd(ntfs) - same 2GB file (1.6.5 ~6.6sec, 1.6.9 ~6.2sec) 6% faster (look beneath!)

-- same ssd (exFat) read/write (1.6.5 ~12.5sec, 1.6.9 10.8sec) 15% faster
-- same ssd (ntfs) read/write (1.6.5 ~9.5sec, 1.6.9 ~6.9sec) 37% faster

(exFat vs ntfs - cant explain that.. seems, write-rates on exfat here are slow(er) than expected..)

-- todo for 1.7.0
(*) verification of you, if fixes above do well - rewriting for all file-variations.
(*) verticalbanding refinement
(*) some GUI infos (warnings and errors on files that are making problems while dropping)

regards chmee

wish I had a computer to test your new build.

6x performance.. Wow! how did you pull that off?

I did a test for you. 5D3 with 1.2.3.

Appeared to work fine in raw2cdng 1.6.9 Alpha but when I pulled it into AE, error on the 50th frame, as well as in Premiere Pro. I had vertical banding and chroma smoothing on limited to 12bit.

Error in AE when importing

The 50th Frame

Importing into Premiere Pro did not give me an error through the Media Browser but, this is the 50th Frame

Hi, chmee great job on the superfastification! :D They work great.

Crash reports: I have this two 4GB+ MLVs that kept crashing. I tried slicing them down to 55mb to send to you but they don't crash. Size is exactly 4,293,845,600 bytes on both. It's one of them multiple files MLV.

Also, on the thumbnail preview: it seems the highlights are clipped. I exposed it to the right and almost maxed out the histogram and the thumbnails are almost entirely white. (these are videos of the sky with clouds etc).

hi chmee

great tool!
didn't find your answer on question - can we get bad/hot pixel fix any time soon? :)

thanx

ps: with 6d dng's and vertical banding on with 1.6.5 i was getting some weird super "oversharp"  on the edges with some (not all) sequences, so decided to turn it off. do you need these files to check what's wrong?
6D - 5D - NEX - M50!

Kharak

Converted footage with 165 and 169

Can't say how much.. But 169 is MUCH faster!

First time I enjoy watching MLV being converted ;)

Thanks Chmee.
once you go raw you never go back

chmee

@ChadMuffin
it seems, theres simply no frame 50.
(1) is this the only one that lacks? or lacks every 50s?
(2) does it happen on every mlv?

while im rewriting the read-functions i just found more potential pitfalls, where the chronology could be wrong, the offset could change.. so please be patient.

regards chmee

Had a file I converted with raw2cdng 1.6.9. It had a missing frame at around count 100 and one right before the shot ends.

I thought it was the MLV file but as I saw you mentioning it might be the conversion, I tried converting the same file with mlvmystic and the frames were not missing.

Its not at an interval. The shot is 4000+ frames and its only frame 101 and 4000(something).
once you go raw you never go back

chmee

actually i'm implementing some kind of diagnostics on rightclick, because i ve got as well one file it seems to lose one frame somewhere in the middle..

Hey chmee, please, don't leave out spanned MLVs, when(ever) possible :)))
Cool new update though!!!

chmee

its already implemented :) actually i finish the diagnostics and a small bug in raw-spanned files.

Danne

Hi Chmee. What is your solution for handling spanned raw files. Curious.

chmee

spanned files (raw and mlv) are supported a long time. i just found a bug in my new implementation. i dont know, how you mean that question.

(a) mlv is easy. generate list of VIDFs with file-offset, frame-number and spanfile-Number. frames are complete in one file.
(b) raw is quite the same while generating this list. caution: frames can be splitted. thus theres a delta-offset in spanned files.

i hope, today i will throw a new source on bitbucket.

Yea, I,m on mac so havn,t seen how extracting spanned files is done. Mlrawviewever and another app for mac here. Would you have any clue how to get it done in unix perhaps. Long shot I know but you seem to know your stuff.
WOuld you also know how white balance is recorded to MLV files? I tried setting K(kelvin) on my cam(5d mark 3) But when viewing in exiftool I get Asshotneutral. Sorry if this is a little of topic.
