Help finding a working raw workflow
« on: November 09, 2017, 07:41:43 PM »
FIXED

I just wanned to thank you guys.

@masc
@reddeercity
@Danne
@Ilia3101

You guys are the t!ts.

Put me as a reference if you ever decide to apply for NASA, I'll return the favor.

Next, is a summary of my journey in case you are curious..

1. I need to find a converter because I want to shot a short using 10bit raw + sound.
2. No a single app works, (just MLVMystic which is  unusable due to the vertical stripes of the 5DM3 )
3. I upgraded from 10.6 to 11.11 This broke all my editing softwares (CS5).
4. Fixed the editing softwares by (I don't remember, I downloaded a bunch of crap from people with the same problem).
5. The MLV converters are readable files now, but I can't install them because my computer thinks that is not safe porn.
6. I learned how to disable the security bs, but it did not worked. I learned a different way, it works.
7. I installed and use the recommended MLV converters. they are good (now I know), but none of my editing softwares can read the files, which means that I didn't know at that time if they work or not because I have never used them.
8. I discovered compatibilities issues, and downloaded the latest raw reader whatever version, it did not work. The files coming from the converters were still unreadable.
9. I ate a sandwich
10. I discovered that I need to enable my editing softwares to understand what a cDNG is. I also discovered that ADOBE discontinued the links and it was a mess.
11. I discovered that it doesn't matter if you dowloaded the latest Raw reader because the adobe software is too old to understand what's going on.
12. I panic
13. I found what was the latest version of raw reader whatever my CS5 poor man editing software can support, and tracked a shady link down. It says that my CS5 don't support the 5DM3 because is old, still I downloaded the file and crossed my fingers.
14. Now I can read cDNG and DNG coming from the MLV converters.

Never had a problem installing and using MLVFS. Which platform do you use, Win, Linux, OSX,...? To which format you like to convert?

There is Switch (OSX), MLVProducer (Win), MLVApp, mlv_dump, ...

I'm using OSX 10.6.8, and I believe this is cause of my problem, it is too old.

I would like to convert the files to dng + sound.

I downloaded Switch today, and just like MLVFS, it just gives me an "open" prompt but nothing else happen.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, could be issues with security handling. It's actually very easy to get passed gate keeper in sierra. Just hold ctrl and click and open Switch the first time.

MLVFS Just send me to automator, it says: "The workflow was saved with a newer version of the action "Ask for finder" and "Get specific URLs". Some behavior may have changed".

I don't really know what else to do at this point. Before I hang myself tell me something, does MLV_dump also convert sound files? If that's the case I"ll have to learn to deal with the terminal, other than that... I'm done I guess. Byebye raw  :'(

You could try open automator on your mac and the open up Switch or mlvfs inside automator. Then you save either app and if you're lucky it will work for your version of automator.
If that doesn't work you could rebuild the automator actions manually and rebuild the apps from scratch.
Or you could simply upgrade to macos sierra.

I had the same problems on 10.6.8: MLVFS was not working there. MlRavViewer needed OpenCL which my MacBookWhite did not offer. The only thing I got to run was MLVProducer under Wine (but that was somewhat slow).
In principle MLVApp could run under 10.6.8, but we would have to compile Qt libraries for 32bit, and then the App... that is also no fun, and there is no dng converter inside yet - only ProRes.

Do you mean openGL? It can be downloaded?
Also suggest to simply open up mlvfs in automator and resave it. If it can't be opened the actions can be rebuilt manually and that is easy since it's really only a few passthrough actions in mlvfs. In Switch not that easy since I use some obscure workarounds with a couple of automator apps being called upon from inside the main app.
I might assist in rebuilding Switch through a teamviewer session if there's any interest.

I completely forgot to talk about about Rawviewer. Every time I open a clip with it, the clip play automatically (corrupted frames) and the it crashes.

I have never used automator. I will give it a try and report back.

No, I mean openCL and that is a hardware feature. It was the main problem on older machines for me... no MlRawViewer, no FCPX, no Davinci Resolve,...

@Edgar Matos
Automator is used in Switch as a wrapper for scripts. I guess you are using an older mac so it won't upgrade to latest os? How old is it? It has 64bit architecture?
Anyway. You might get stuck with not being able to even open and resave in automator so I suggested a teamviewer session which would let me rebuild Switch on your very machine.

@masc
I believe you hit the nail in the head. I just remember the image I see in MLVFS look almost identical to the mess of colors I see when I open davinci.

@Danne
I'm using an 21.5 Inch Imac 2011. Yes, 64bit.
At this point I'm open for anything that can help.

OSX 10.6.8 is no real 64bit, that started with 10.7. I now also use a 21.5" iMac 2011, but with 10.11 and that works very well with MLVFS+Resolve14. Maybe you just should install a newer OSX and you won't have these problems with RAW.
Before I had 10.9 + MLVFS + Resolve 11. Also this combination was working perfectly. I just updated for the latest Resolve.
Btw: MLVFS supports already 10bit RAW? Edit: yes it does... tried it out.

So 32bit... And that gentleman is why I don't like surprises. I lived the 64bit lie for years.

Your confident also triumphed over my paranoid of F^&($ing my mac just when I most need it. I am downloading The Captain at the moment, so I can give it another go to MLVFS

Updated.

I am as frustrated as confused.

REPORT:

0> MLVFS seems to work? I don't know yet, it just open but nothing can read the files I produce.
1. Now I'm using 10.11.6 instead of 10.6.8
2. Broke Premier and after effects. (Fixed)
3. I can't import DNG to photoshop? (I updated the camera raw plugging to 10 still uses 6 because I'm using CS5 and 6 is as far as it goes). I know this because I can apparently convert files with MLVMystic and send them back to after effects.
4. Clips recorded using the 10/12-bit RAW video with the latest 2017August21.5D3113.zip in 14 10bits doesn't have any audio (MLVSound enabled = WAV with 0kb). and overtime I try to open it on after effects the next prompt shows up: After Effects error: Photoshop file format error (-30505 ) (45::35).
- But if the same file is converted using MLVMystic, After Effects can read it without a problem (sound is till not being recorded).

I don't know if the reason I can't open the files is simply because I can't read CinemaDNG files, I looked for samples yet I can't find any to test it out. And by the other hand, I don't know why I'm not recording sound even when the option is enabled.

After Effects, PhotoShop, Premier CS5.

Update: I found out Adobe dropped cDNG compatibility with the versions I'm using.

-Switch doesn't open due to security BS
-MLVApp... I don't know but I have an easier time understanding Japanesse instructions.
-mlv_dump (untested. looking into it).

@ Edgar Matos can you upload a sample of the 5D3 files you are using ? I can check them in mlvfs on my MacPro 5.1 with Sierra & I can also check them on my Late 2013 MacPro running Yosemite and see if there a problem. Plus I have Adobe After Effect CS6 so I can check that pipeline .

I really appreciate it.
FILE LINK:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vg9uzxm49bkog2n/M13-0105.MLV?dl=0

The latest thing I have done was to enable the "apps dowloaded from 'shady' places to be able to install" without a problem. As consequence, I installed MLrawviewer 1.4.3. The only files I can convert are shoot in 14 bits. Still, the DNG folder shows 0kb WAV file save, and aren't photoshop or aftereffect friendly. The 10 or 12bit options just shows corrupted frames.

I have been doing this for almost 11 straight hours and it is 2 AM already. Excuse me if i disappear for a little while.

Downloaded your file and:
- directly MlRawViewer 1.4.3: does not work
- MLVFS+MlRawViewer 1.4.3: works
- MLVFS+Resolve 14.1: works
- MLV App: works
on OSX 10.11.

But: there is no audio. So there is something wrong with your ML setting or version.

-MLVApp... I don't know but I have an easier time understanding Japanesse instructions.

What's the problem? Download a release, unzip, doubleclick. You don't need to compile anything for using a Qt-Version release of MLV App.

With your MLVFS problem: did you enable MLVFS in the OSX settings->security? If not it may be blocked.

@mac
Thanks for the test.

-directly MlRawViewer 1.4.3: does not work / CORRECT
- MLVFS+MlRawViewer 1.4.3: works / I HAVEN'T TRIED THE COMBINATION
- MLVFS+Resolve 14.1: works / I'M POOR, MY COMPUTER EAT AZZ, NO RESOLVE.
- MLV App: works / I DIDN'T INSTALL IT BECAUSE I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTION. I'LL GIVE IT A TRY AGAIN.

I disable the security so I can use mlvrawviwer and install MLVFS, but the problem is that the frames they produces are unreadable in all the Adobe software I have.

Would you mind sharing your ML settings with me, I have use the raw function many timea but this is the first timestep (the stable 14 bits not the new 12 and 10 bits) I have this problem.

I'll give it another try once I get out of work.

I am a grown azz man. I can speak almost 3 languages, yet I fail to describe the level of frustration I feel at the moment with just letters.

@masc
Allow me to ask you, did you happened to be able to export (anything) with MLVFS+MlRawViewer using the file I provided?

I tried your combination. I can't export it. Now, I don't know that is because I have the coefficient of a banana or the BS file is indeed corrupted. Or simply I don't know how to use the thing because it is literally my first time using it. Not counting this place is a labyrinth were I can't find anything without before working the veins of my forehead.

Regarding MLV App
The file I had was called MLV App Master, in which there weren't any way to install it. I don't want to go into detail, I just found instructions that required you to have clear understanding on "coding" blabla moving on.

I found "a" version of MLV App. I installed it. I opened it. I opened the file and play with the options. I hit export ProRess 4444 (which is the only option there is). I choose a folder and the app finishes exporting.

Well the folder is empty because the app didn't do anything. And sometimes it crashes after finishing doing nothing.

By the other hand, I could not help noticing that you are using a completely different version I happened to snatch from the voids of Hell, called MLV App (Oct 21 2017 22:13:23 @ilias-iMac.home)

So I beg you. Give me your version of MLV App, or link, I don't mind... help?

I really don't know what you are doing to get so frustrated.
https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App/releases/tag/QTv0.10alpha
Download the OSX version: https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App/releases/download/QTv0.10alpha/MLV.App.v0.10.alpha.OSX.zip
You will get a zip. On OSX, doubleclicking a zip, will unzip this file. You will get the App, or a folder where the app is inside. Doubleclick the app. You now have opened MLV App. In Preferences you will get 5 different ProRes codecs + options for some of them or Uncompressed AVI export. Chose one. Import a file. Do your settings in the Edit area. Click export file. Wait until ready. You now have exported a file.

MLVFS+MlRawViewer: to what you like to export? Cdng you have then already for example. And this also works wihtout a problem in Resolve14 on a iMac 2011 21.5".

Alright, I finally made this things work.

@masc
My frustration still comes by the fact that is next to impossible to find what you are looking for in here. The link you provided to me is excellent. I downloaded 2 different versions of MLV App that do literally nothing. This is because the post where such apps are uploaded are not updated with the latest information, leaving you to search endlessly thought time and space.

The other part, is the fact that I don't have the nicest and latest toys. I can't run Resolve, if I have to say that a couple more times I'd have to make it my catchphrase. 2010 iMac can't run it, it's even still installed on my hard drive at the moment because I wanned to give it another try.

@Ilia3101
Thanks for the link. It helps a lot to know where the eggs are coming.

Next, is a summary of my journey in case you are curious..

1. I need to find a converter because I want to shot a short using 10bit raw + sound.

10. I discovered that I need to enable my editing softwares to understand what a cDNG is. I also discovered that ADOBE discontinued the links and it was a mess.
11. I discovered that it doesn't matter if you dowloaded the latest Raw reader because the adobe software is too old to understand what's going on.
12. I panic

14. Now I can read cDNG and DNG coming from the MLV converters.

00. I wasn't recording sound simply because turning the MLVSound on doesn't record sound any more. I learned that you have to enable sound for the second time on the sound options.

Interestingly, every time I import a frame (2.67 aspect ratio) to After effects, it thinks that it is 16:9. So I have to treat my footage like anamorphic footage and squeeze the frame back to 2.67.

Thanks for all your help. Now I have to deal with the difficult part which is making a movie, first day of shooting Saturday November 25.
