Prepare delay after pressing start button

The only related topic I could find was so old it was suggested I start a new one.

When recording raw with my 7D, after pressing the start button there is a delay (with a small icon and the word 'Prepare') before recording starts. Is it possible to eliminate this? For wildlife filming it can mean missing the action. Also, what function does 'prepare' serve?
