Hi Everyone,

I am looking at possibly purchasing the Canon 5D MK III and I am looing at the recording options and cost associated in RAW. I have been watching some Youtube videos about the Atomos Shogun and its capability to record to SSD cards. It supports HDMI etc from what I can see which the Canon supports.

My question is, Does the magic Lantern output clean full frame footage through the HDMI so that I can use an external recorder to capture the footage using SSD card which is quite a lot cheaper than Cfast etc.

Sorry if the question seems silly as I am not a Pro camera user.

Any help or support is much appreciated.

Regards,
Mike

The 5D3 won't output 14 bit RAW/MLV over the HDMI port unfortunately. It's a limitation of the camera, not the Atomos recorders.

It will output "clean" video over the HDMI port, but it is still in a compressed format. The only way to get full resolution continuous uncompressed RAW/MLV is to record to fast CompactFlash cards. The good news is that Komputerbay sells very fast CF cards for relatively cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-Professional-Compact-Flash-Extreme/dp/B00J9OS4V0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429550047&sr=8-1&keywords=komputerbay+64gb

I have two of those and they have worked really well so far.

Is it enough for recording raw file? I thought that must be 128gb or 256gb 1060x

Yes, the 64GB 1066X cards are fast enough to do at least 1920x1080 24P RAW (maybe even 30 fps...I haven't tested that though). You don't have to buy a high capacity card, you just need to make sure the card is fast enough. Keep in mind that the 5D3 compactflash slot is only capable of writing at a maximum of ~100 MB/s. There's an extensive thread where people tested various cards, and the 1066X 64GB cards seem to be faster and more reliable than the larger capacity cards with an equivalent speed rating (at least for Komputerbay, not sure if that holds true for other manufacturers):

You can use this handy tool to calculate how much footage (time) you will get on a card at a particular resolution & frame rate:

128gb versions tend to be slower but 256gb KB cars seem to be faster than 128gb. Not sure if the 64gb cards have an edge  against the 256gb versions. But there's no problem recording full hd 25p with sound on 256gb 1066x KB cards.

Keep in mind (as you will see in those tests) that the cards don't always live up to their speed rating. That's why people are having much better luck with 1066X cards than 1000X, even though 1000X is supposed to be faster than the camera is capable of writing. 1066X cards give you more wiggle room when a particular card isn't actually as fast as its sticker says it is.
