Unlocking Rear Curtain/Second Curtain Sync

I can't speak for other models, but in the 550D, rear curtain sync can only be enabled in two ways -- one; if you have an official canon speedlight attached, or two, if you use the pop-up flash. I realize there are radio triggers available that allow the user to adjust sync speed, but it's something that I'd love Magic Lantern to be able to do.

I googled, and I did find a thread on this very forum about the matter, but it was posted over two years ago and nobody responded. There's also a missing video on the wiki, which is really frustrating.

Also, I know there are other workarounds, like using the pop-up flash as an optical trigger, but it's not the greatest solution. Is it possible for Magic Lantern to enable rear curtain sync no matter what's plugged into the hotshoe?
