Where/When can we setup the cluster size ? using computer or the Eos ?

Considering the Sandisk Extreme  ::) ::) ::) ::)

Limited by card interface to about 41 MByte/s. And in movie mode you won't even reach that one.
See a few posts above. Extreme Pro on 650D in movie mode doesn't hit the roof.

(it used to work fine but now it won't record longer than 1 second... see related post)

Got Lexar 1066x 128GB  - somewhat a disappointment.

In USB3/UDMA7 it showed stable 134 mb/s /write, but in playback on 5D3 (1.2.3) it was max 112mb/s, typically about 108. ~10mb/s slower than KB (117-119). Unlike KB card it never stalled in the beginning during recoding at 24fps, but couldn't sustain anything approaching 90mb/s (1:1 modes, 30fps, etc.).

I wonder if it is typical. Still waiting for my Lexar 64 GB 1066x  from Adorama. It seems like it's unrealistic to expect stable 90+ mb/s from 128GB cards?

jimmyD30

For now, I'm guessing we'll need 1200x (180MBps theoretical read speed) card to eke out reliable 100MBps write???

Hey guys: Brand new to this forum! Many thanks already for all the guidance and wisdom from all the members.

Anyways, just wanted to add my benchmarks for this great thread.

Edit: Doesnt look like I can add photos yet. is this an earned priv?

Will add some 6D results and compile the results so far in the next few days.

@Bropa  share a link.

Ok, here we go

PS: Should I be concerned about these temps? 52C-53C ? Please advise!

I've got my Lexar 1066x 64GB. It's the fastest card I've tried, faster than SanDisk 160mb/s 128GB, I rented for my SD trip.

I consistently get 120.8-120.9 MB/S writing and 153.8MB/S (yes, exactly this number) reading. Faster than any of 128GB cards I tried before: 2xKB, 4xTranscend. My USB3 says it can do 138MB/s write. Reading is the same as in camera. Pretty fast.

It can do about 15 secs of 30fps at FullHD, more with card spanning (SanDisk Extreme  64GB), but can't sustain it (GD off).

How the heck people get 30fps? Or there is something I don't know? Like they don't get it at FullHD?

jimmyD30

Are those speeds in-camera with 'movie' mode setting?

KMikhail

No, photo mode.
Movie, 24fps, GD OFF: 90W/120R.
Movie, 30fps, GD OFF: 85.5W/115R.
All on 1.2.3.

Don't get excited, the 5D3 SD slot is hardware limited to around 20MB/s.  Doesn't matter how fast the card actually is.

I've compiled the results so far into a dropbox folder, updated the OP and added some notes.  Feel free to let me know if I missed your results.

Thank you very much for telling me , otherwise I might buy one...
:P

Noobie alert!!

Apologies in advance but despite spending much time to the simple answers for myself, I now have to ask.....

Is it a case of just picking out the highest write speed you get from a 5 min bench test that determines the speed of a card? Also, what is the minimum card write speed for shooting RAW on a 5D Mk3?
What happens if your card is not fast enough - do you get footage in smaller dimensions or missing frames?

thanks

Bropa

What usually happens is the recording will just quite, and the camera will prompt you with a message, "recording has stopped" something like that... At least on the T5i that's what happens..

sandisk extreme SD card, 45mb/s, dos not reaches this speed because 5D3`s limit is 20mb/s? Even with ML software installed?

so, what`s the 5D3 CF slot hardware speed limit?

thanx  ;)

I have these results for my 2 newest cards, right from the pack:

KOMPUTERBAY 64GB 1066x / 5D MKIII / 24FPS #1

KOMPUTERBAY 64GB 1066x / 5D MKIII / 24FPS #2

Here's another Kombuterbay 64GB 1066x CF on Canon 5D3.123 @ 24fps right after formating:

Edit:
1) My initial test before formating the card was little bit slower, every buffer.
2) After the test above I did it again few days later. I formated card again, then reboot and this time I ran card warm up (1gb). However there wasn't almost any difference at all. Same numbers +/- 0.1
