General Help Q&A / Re: RAW file extension
March 14, 2021, 12:16:17 AM
Hi Isabella. There is a (not free) plugin that allows MLV files to be used natively in Premiere Pro: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=8627.0
Not sure how stable this is by now.

EDIT: Aparently their "Media Reactor Workstation lite" for 99$ enables full read capabilities. I am not sure though if this includes the export of the edit as their overview states that export is only included in the non lite license that costs 495$. It will probably be a good idea to contact the developers.

Liveview seems very slow on the 48Fps mode. I connected a viewfinder to the HDMI thaough and that gave me a smooth preview!

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: MLVFS windows client

Hey, just tried to download the current version of the "MLV WebDAV Server" but the server is not reachable :/

yes

The raw is significantly better.

Simultaneous recording is possible with the 1.2.3 firmware. Only draw back is that all overlays (not the menu) are deactivated on the 5Ds internal screen while a hdmi connection is active.
And the hdmi gives you only 8bit 422 not 10bit 422.
I think the triggering doesnt work yet.

Hey guys,

I have downloaded the Transcend autoformat program, but I do not see an option for a "low-level" format. The two options I see are "optimized" and "complete" ... Which one is considered the low-level format?

I have tried formatting both ways, and have still had skipped frames at 1920x1080 24fps RAW on my Transcend 1000x 64gb. I also have trouble getting the card to read in my lexar 3.0 card reader. Just curious which one is the low-level format, so I can stick with that and work on other problems from there.

Your card reader's firmware should be updated to support UDMA 7 cards.

Looks like you need to get yourself a 5D3 or a mosaic engineering olpv filter ;)

I would like to be able to easily match those shots that are shot in raw and those that are only recorded externally or internally to h.264. I was hoping to be able to use Digital Photo Professional, canons own raw converter. Which allows picture styles like the cinestyle to be applied to .cr2 raw photos. But sadly the software doesn't recognize the extracted DNGs.

Is there a way to make DPP recognize the extracted frames? Or can someone give me a workflow alternative?

If your shooing schedule is very very packed I would consider a stable camera with a flat log profile and and a proper codec...

If you still want to stick to raw, use the 1.2.3 firmware with fast and stable CF cards (Lexar 1000x, Toshiba 1000x, Sandisk 1000x).
You will be able to use the camera's lcd and an external LCD at full 1080p.
The ML and Canon Menu are working as usual, only any kind of overlay disappears when you plug in the HDMI cable.
Also, if the 5d has some kind of a problem with the connected monitor it might go into some kind of fall back mode
that will disable the 5d's screen an put the hdmi signal into 576p. So better do extensive testing before!

I prefer to record a backup via HDMI to a cheap recorder like the hyperdeck shuttle 2.

When offloading the data from the cards use a checksum checking program.

MLrawViewer is a great tool to play back raw clips directly from the card.

Raw Video / Re: Atomos Ninja 2 for RAW playback
June 21, 2014, 10:47:59 PM
I just recorded some footage to a hyper deck shuttle 2 and have some odd playback experience. HDMI framerate was set to auto. While playing back the prores files on a computer it seems to be played back quite fast, although the players recognize the material as 25p, what I intended to record.
The beep from rec start stop gets sent through hdmi, maybe that helps for syncing.

Feature Requests / Re: Audio output through HDMI
June 21, 2014, 10:07:55 PM
I now use an external recorder all the time, especially when I am shooting raw. I recognized, that the start stop beep is sent through hdmi and gets properly recorded on the hyper deck shuttle 2 so in theory it should be possible to direct sound towards hdmi.
Next to proper triggering this would be a great improvement of my raw workflow!

I need it too!

I wasn't referring to an Alexa, rather a black magic or something similar (but all the cheap solutions bring tons of their own special  quirks that have to be dealt with, so sticking with a system you already know sounds reasonable).

So anyhow, looks like you have a good background and approach (handle it like a shoot on film stock).

So the things left to say would be: Testing the two cameras a lot, so you know all the problem scenarios.
Recording raw while monitoring via HDMI might also behave differently, then without (does it even work at all?).

Shutting down the live view when ever you can, especially on a well lit set the cameras heat up quickly and I think i noticed an increased noise due to risen temperature on the 5d3 and the 7d has one of the worst sensors...

Maybe check at what ISOs the 50d and 7d have similar noise patterns for better matching of intercut shots.

When backing up, use a checksum tool, might save you a lot of trouble...

ML Raw still produces bad frames sometimes, you don't find out until you checked the recorded files...

Komputerbay cards do not seem to be very reliable, some users say they run rockstable, some report corrupt files and some even corrupted cards that lose the entire data. Extensive testing of the cards beforehand will save you from losing material but even then a risk will stay...

Due to the lower resolution than 1080p you will not need the fastest card available so borrowing cards from friends/colleages or a rental becomes an option. Take a closer look at the Sandisk 32+GB 120,90 and 60MB/s cards too. Transcend 1000x also perform alright.

MLRawViewer is a cool tool to take a quick look at shots taken directly from the camera.

For safety I would only use USB 3 card readers (with newest firmware) and stick to one reader only that is known to work, some UDMA7 cards get corrupted by readers.

I guess many of my points were already considered.

I recorded the 1080p 422 8bit signal from the HDMI of my 5d3 with firmware 1.2.3 and the nightly build successfully while recording raw to the camera. All overlays on the screen on the back of the camera disappeared, when the recorder was connected, I am not sure if this has been fixed yet. I doubt that any kind of record trigger will work at this point but I didn't try the latest builds for some time.
Ninja Blade should work the same, if not better!

I asked why you want to shoot raw, because it brings quite a lot of problems with it.
I shot a short film with my 5d3 in raw, we had quite difficult circumstances that asked for quite long takes and we often had to repeat a shot so I went through the cf cards pretty quickly and could not even check if all the files had been recorded fine... (I did record a backup via HDMI to a recoder though...). The whole thing took place in a driving car, so it was really an unpractical situation, no data wrangler could help me with backups and file checking. (I had borrowed and rented around 10 cf cards and was switching all the time, some cards suddenly didn't perform like they should), the external recorder was running a 256gb SSD, recorded 1080p 422 10bit and hold the whole day...

Of course the resolution is almost perfect 1080p (if you keep the iso low), you can recover the highlights and shadows (if you keep the iso low) and change the white balance to your likings. Special effects like keying or changing the color of whole objects is also is made possible by the data the raw files offer.
But in the end the look of the film will be more effected by the colors and light you chose in front of the camera. So I would prefer to shoot with a another camera, that offers true 1080p resolution and lets say a prores 422 10bit codec for better gradeability, that records more than only 15minutes per memory card and does not have all those funny quirks the ml raw cameras have...

#17
Why do you want to shoot raw?
#18
With firmware 1.2.3 monitoring works flawlessly, full 1080p, no delay/glitch after pressing record (only when going into menu and back). I recorded a backup to a recorder in case the raw files had glitches.
Drawback: With the build from march that I tested all overlays on the camera screen disappeared, when connecting a monitor. So I was without cropmarks and other little helpers.

ExFat is not necessary, because ml supports file spanning into multiple 4GB files. (or did I miss any other benefit from the exfat format?)

@Midphase
What card exactly are you using? Are you on 1.1.3 oder 1.2.3?

@ch_d
I would stick with firmware 1.1.3 if you are ok with the slightly windowed 720p HDMI output (I personally have no experience using raw video and hdmi monitoring on the old 1.1.3 firmware, on 1.2.3 it worked fine...).
It is for now the more stable platform if you want to max out the write performance (I doubt you will reach continuous recording at 1920x1250@30fps).
And raw rec is more stable than mlv, so if it is not absolutely necessary, better find another solution
to sync sound in post.
If you really need 30fps, raw and 3:2 aspect, better settle for less resolution. It is still plenty of detail and will upscale nicely...
Using the HDMI for monitoring also might decrease write performance.

So, is it possible to disable the bootflag on all 5DIIIs now if you update to 1.2.3?

I just tested the Feb. 19 build cause I am preparing a short film that's supposed to be shot this weekend. I would like to record a backup to a recorder via HDMI to be extra save.
The whole plot takes place inside a car and we want to mount the camera outside the car and remotely trigger start stop with a wireless photo trigger. To monitor if the camera is actually recording or if it has stopped cause of skipped frames i wanted to put a long cable into the headphone jack and listen to the start stop beep with headphones because the cameras lcd is out of sight. Unfortunatly there is no beep anymore with the feb. 19 build that i tried. Can someone help me on this?

Has someone tried to contact the company to see if they could include features that would work well with ml?

General Chat / Hardware modified 5D Mark III Rumor
February 28, 2014, 02:27:59 PM
If it is true and they are actually modifying the hardware, maybe they could also implement a CFast 2.0 Interface, Sata Interface (one can dream) or just a faster SD Card Interface for improved card spanning performance.
Or just true 1080p by more advanced debayering and converting to a video codec.
