Pure awesomeness.. this is an amazing short great job.  You definitely can work on a feature film you have the eye of a true cinematographer.  What was your workflow like?

Thank you so much!

This was not shot on raw but with ML running on the camera for crop marks, waveform and zebras.  I recorded prores onto my Atomos Ninja 2 and edited those files natively in premiere.

I wanted to shoot raw but this whole thing came together so late that I wouldn't have been able to finish by halloween weekend like I wanted. If you have a raw workflow that works great for you I'd love to hear it. Mine isn't so bad but it takes more time because my machine is a few years old.

I directed and shot this little Halloween short film. Would love some feedback if you have a second. I'll answer any technical questions you might have.

Hope you enjoy!

Hi!

I just wanted to say, regarding using the cinestyle profile, I found out that when shooting raw with magic lantern it doesn't really matter with profile you are using because it will not affect the data you will work with.

Cinestyle only gets applied to the footage if shooting h264. :)

Thanks for the response! Yea I noticed that too with literally every other project I've shot except this one. For some reason this time when the clips were imported directly into premiere they were definitely flat. Again, I'm not the most technical person so I could be missing something.

Very nice.
Emotionnal.

The great French director Jean Luc Godard said :
_" photography is reality, cinema is reality 24 times per second".

This is the case in your short clip.

Thank you Francis! Very kind of you to say.

lovely! very cinematic feel! mind sharing the workflow? color grading process?

Thanks Oliya!

Here is my workflow. I don't know if it's the "correct" one but it seemed to work here.

I mounted the mlv files using MLVFS. Then I copied the dng files onto my external hard drive. I edited those files natively in Premiere CC. It was a little slow but my machine is a few years old so I'm sure it would work better on a newer one. I didn't edit from the mounted MLVFS because the media kept going missing in between editing sessions. The color process again was pretty simple. I used Colorista 3 and Magic Bullet Film on adjustment layers in Premiere. I wanted to try and stay in premiere the whole time on this one instead of jumping back and forth to resolve.

It's quite cinematic! I like the way you colored and that grain on top has a pretty analog feel.

Did you use any log on this one?

I shot in technicolor cinestyle. Honestly I have been using that since the beginning of raw on the 5D so I'm not sure if it's the best or not. I haven't kept up. If you know of something better let me know. And thanks for the compliment!

Great story, really. Most of the emotions resides in non verbal usually. It's a good exemple.

Thank you!

I made this three minute short film to learn the new MLV file system but it turned into a really personal piece for me. Hope you enjoy it.

If you have any workflow questions I'll happily answer them.

Great work Mike,

Attention to detail in the expressions of your characters gave depth to your scenes. You also show a impressive example of what the 24-105 f4 can do.

Thank you! I'm definitely happy with the performances in the reel. Couldn't have made the images as pretty as I was able to without ML on the budgets we were working with. I owe it a lot.

All footage in the reel except for six clips was filmed on a 5D mark3 running ML with the 24-105mm f4. The six that weren't shot on the 5D were shot on the Alexa. First person to give time stamps of all Alexa footage wins. If you confuse any of the ML footage for Alexa footage I WIN!  ;)

Hope you dig the new reel.

Great shots/grade. Followed on Vimeo, can't wait to see more from you.

Nice work! Have you ever shot a colour chart with the 5D and Alexa side by side? If so I'd be very interested to see a DNG from each.

Thanks! Unfortunately we didn't. We just hoped for the best here and luckily it worked out.

Hopefully the shots from the car at 3:15 and forward because I really like the grade of those  ;D

Yes a bit compressed maybe hard to get it under the limit with Prores to vimeo. Good work!

Thanks. Glad you liked it.

Here is my latest short shot on the two cameras listed above and some Sony F35.
As far as I'm concerned the 5D raw footage blends seamlessly with these two very expensive cameras.
I know with streaming compression it helps but even in the master its basically impossible to tell.

See if you can figure out where the 5D is used.

Hopefully you'll enjoy the film as well.

A teaser for my new short we're funding now on Indiegogo.

Not here to get contributions but for tips on making the teaser as compelling as possible.

Also it was my first time using raw in awhile so any tips on the grade are also very welcome.

I liked the short (hated the weird open end ;D, but seems typical for short-films)
The switching camera angles makes it interesting to watch (waterdrops on the window, face filmed from the front, face filmed from the back of the car etc.)
And then there's the nice orange/teal look  ;)

Quality of the image makes me guess that this was shot in h.264 and not in raw, it isn't super detailed/sharp.
And the noise that is present makes me think you used a flat picture profile.

Thanks! The end does seem to be getting a mixed response. I kinda like it! ;D

I used an external recorder. The Ninja 2. And the flat profile I used was cinestyle.

Love this so much. 5D3 is such a beast, ain't it?

Care to share the specs/settings used within Canon as well as ML and which glass did you use?

Also which converter & workflow did you choose in Post?

Thanks for sharing @mbiondo25!

Thanks man! I've posted my last few shorts on here and you've always been supportive. Really appreciate it. 5D is a beast for sure.

Got a lot going on this weekend but i'll post my workflow soon.

Thanks again for checking it out.
