Hey Melvin, good job. I like your video essays (seems to be quite inspired by Nerdwriter1), although I would suggest you go a bit beyond and start to talk about philosophy and/or science. I'd recommend you a yt channel called "Shots of Awe", it has some pretty good videos.

About your workflow, are you using ImpulZ? The greens and yellow seem to be approximated to the reds, which make it very "teal and orange" kind of coloration. I do like it, but (I don't know you guys), I'm getting a little sick of all this teal and orange thing. People should go people just two colors.

I really like this transition effect too.

Awesome that you like my video. I do enjoy Nerdwriter1 quite a bit yes. The essay type of video is not really my kind of jam. These voiceovers are a result of me having conversations with myself mixed with showerthoughts. I'd like to keep it simple like that. Shots of Awe seems like a cool channel. I think I have seen a video by him before. Can't really remember.

I used to experiment with ImpulZ yes, but I like the luts by IWLTBAP more. I get what you're saying about the orange/teal look. I try to go for a bit more greenish desaturated look, but people really seem to like the orange/teal. As far as color grading goes, it's actually Juan Melara that got me excited for it trough his blog. To bad he's not active anymore.

The transitions are called smooth transitions and have blown up in popularity on YouTube and Instagram lately. Everybody and their moms are using them because of Sam Kolder.

You create such inspiring videos. I also have a 6D and wondering how you are able to record at 50fps 1824 x 776?
Sorry if you have answered this before,I am new. thanks
Im using a 95mbs card btw.

Thank you!
I actually made a mistake writing that down. It should have been the other way around. I corrected it now.

Here's my latest video!

Camera: Canon 6D

Resolution:
25 fps: 1824 x 776 upscaled to 1920 x 816
50 fps: 1824 x 466 upscaled to 1920 x 816
Timelapse: 1830 x 1224

Color grade: Davinci Resolve 12

5
30 minutes! That's insane.
Does the file get split up into pieces or do you get one huge file? And how large was the project if I may ask.

Really surprised on how much you got away with mv720 (60p and no fps override used, right?) mixed together w Twixtor. Amazing stuff really and thanks for sharing @Melvin Jose!

I don't really know what you mean with mv720, but I have been shooting in 50fps lately. I switch to 25 fps when I want more resolution because of the stretching you have to do with 50/60 fps RAW.
Yeah Twixtor is so much fun to play with.

That was great, and inspiring to see what's possible. Please keep posting!

Thank you so much!

@Melvin This is really amazing! I love the cleanliness and sharpness! but what i dont understand is: how did you manage to shoot over 720p on a 6D?!

I have a delkin SD card that runs at 100mbps writing speed.

https://www.cam4sell.com/images/detailed/4/71jhNQNfPNL._SL1500_.jpg

but it still refuses to shoot over 720p on 30 fps. If you have done slow motion with twixtor then i believe you have shot on 60fps. How?!

Magic Lantern RAW gives you the option to shoot higher resolution 50/60 fps footage. The big drawback is that it will squash the image down vertically. So you lose some vertical resolution. This has to be stretched out in post. Just enable raw recording, switch to 50/60fps and select the 1920 resolution in the RAW module menu.
The 6D can't write data any faster than 40mbps. So having a 100mbps is great but the 6D can't fully utilize it anyways.

Beautiful film. I am a total beginner at colour correction/grading. I have Davinci Resolve 12. Do you use a specific LUT or look? Can you give a little detail about your workflow from flat image to colour graded. Any advice most appreciated!

That's a loaded question. I use a LUT to create a flat profile before anything. Than I add a LUT that I like, assuming the color balance is correct I do some color adjustments to get it to my liking. I also desaturate the shadows and highlights to get a better falloff. In the final node I add some subtle sharpening.
I have created a base preset that I apply to almost all my footage. I came to this preset after a lot of time experimenting and tweaking.
If you want to start of well I recommend you watch Juan Melara's old video. You can find it on his blog.

I would like to share my latest video with you guys.
The opening shot is a timelapse created with the silent shutter feature creating a MLV. I also threw in a hyperlapse wich was created the same way but this time with half shutterpress triggering the capture of the frame. So basicly a step forward, half click, step forward, half click, repeat. I love this method because it keeps my shutter from constantly firing.

I colorgraded the dng files in Resolve and exported to files I could edit in Premiere Pro. There I played around with Twixtor per usual to create these smooth slowmotion movements.
I'm still having lot's of fun playing around with the raw files!

Camera: Canon 6D
Lens: Canon 16-35 F2.8 L II & Sigma 70-200 F2.8
Resolution: 1824 x 466 upscaled to 1920 x 816 | 1824 x 776 upscaled to 1920 x 816
Color grade: Davinci Resolve 12

Nicely done. How in the world did you record 60fps raw video at that resolution on a 6D?

You can only record about 5 seconds at higher frame rate. There are lots of artifacts because of the upscaling and stretching but it can't be helped.

Very nice! Please tell me how you did the transition at 26-27sec! I've been trying to figure that crap out for months

I guess you are talking about the zoom transition? I can recommend you xAlternateTutorials on YouTube. He has some amazing tutorials on transitions. Most of them are about After Effects but he has like 2 about Premiere Pro. I really wanted to be able to do it without switching to after effects. So I did some research and found a way to get the results I was looking for trough his tutorials´╗┐ and lots of experimenting.
These transitions are very popular on Vine with Anime viners.

I too also want to know how you did that, the slowdown. I hardly saw any warping at all which is the usual case when slowing down videos even with a plugin such as twixtor. Good job. Please tell us how.

One of the major tricks is to get it right in-camera. Lot's of video's you see that are slowed down with Twixtor are of people or objects that are moving very fast. I like to capture slow moving or still subjects. The part that realy sells it is the camera movement. I like to move a few steps forward or backwards or do a handheld slide.
First thing I do to the footage is stabilize them with Warp. After that I add Twixtor. I don't know if this is true but I feel like the extra bitrate of the RAW footage helps get better looking results.

Shot at 60fps. Slowed down 10-30% with Twixtor
All shots are handheld. It's loads of work with nesting of already nested clips and at 1/4 Premiere still has trouble with playback but in the end I'm kinda happy with the results.

Tell me whats in the box!!!

Results look good.

Just like my previous post Im again experimenting with 60FPS mlv and the twixtor plug-in to create those super slo mo shots. All shots are done handheld.
Creating MLV hyperlapses saved me a whole lot of work in post . I just used the silent picture mode together with MLV recording. (hyperlapses are at the end of the video)

Yeah that was a typo. I'm sorry.
It was 466px vertical resolution that I had to stretch out.

Hello everyone! I have been experimenting with 60 fps raw together with the Twixtor slowmotion plugin.
I'm kinda falling in love with the results I'm able to get. What do you guys think?
