what about separating chroma channels to be recorded with RAW video? could it further cut the RAW video bitrate?

combining the chroma channels with the H264 compressed video in post, this should give better video quality for the slow write speed camera

quality between full RAW and H264, while giving longer record time perhaps.

just wonder how much different is a EOS camera to a Canon camcorder that run DIGIC DV, can ML or the linux be ported to it?

is it a better chance that this XC10 can record raw in 4K?

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

good to know we are going to have longer time for RAW video.

when can we expect to see it in the nightly build? my son's graduation ceremony is coming soon, hope I can use this for longer RAW video capture.

Duplicate Questions / Re: Is 1080i possible?

could be a good idea to have 1080 24i for 60D that runs SD card, this could allow continuous recording in full resolution

I'm back! well considering that I'm very busy lately the best I can do for now is show you a picture of the outcome of my 60D continuous recording ungraded straight from MLViewer at 1280x720 which aint bad considering that it was a handheld shooting on my bed. This calls for more tests on my side. Can someone tell me how to insert an image here straight from my desktop?

no, you don't have to post an image here, we know you are very busy, don't bother putting image here.

Just let us know if the "continuous" shooting is better than H.264 in your eyes, can't wait to see your usage report

the raw video in 60D with MLV_REC works great

I am shooting in canon 720P mode, so that it is outputting 1728 X 694 (sensor is 5184 X 3456), which is 1/3 of 5184 and 1/5 of 3456.

meaning that stretching 694 lines (by 1.6666X) to 1156 lines gives a perfect 3:2 ratio.

if I want 1728 as a 16:9 ratio, the correct number of lines needed is 1728 / 16 X 9 / 1.666 = 584 lines

right now the aspect ratio is assumed 1.4X in MLV_REC, it might works for other sensor, but not right for 60D. I cannot fit exactly 584 lines in my record, I should either leaving a thin black lines on top and at the bottom of my video, or capture more lines, which will reduce the number of frame it can capture.

please fix it to 1.666X for 60D sensor, thanks

Should be 1.66x

Feature Requests / AF-On for one shot, * for servo
February 18, 2014, 03:56:49 AM
I have been using the AF-On for focusing. Disabling half press to start AF.

when my kids is running around, I use servo, when they are not moving quickly, I use one shot for better precision focusing.

however, the switch between two mode is slow, with my 60D, I have to leave the view finder, click the focus button, move the wheel.

I know 7D has a function to use the depth of field preview button to switch. that is a welcomed function, however, if I can assign it to AE-lock (*) button, so that AF-on perform one-shot, (*) perform servo, that will be even better.

there was another similar request but not getting much attention to, I hope mine can be considered, thanks

with 7D sensor (I believe it is the same as my 60D)

the whole sensor is 5184 X 3456
in 720P mode, the raw output is reading 1 out of 5 lines, 3456 divided by 5 = 692

and the sensor's 3:2 aspect will be converting to 1728 X 692. if recording at 16:9 is needed, it be calculated by the required sensor height and then divided by 5. it is 5184 / 16 * 9 / 5 = 584.

with 1728 X 584 stretching to 1728 X 972, it is actually 1.66X

thanks, finally got it working.

just got my camera to try, however, the arrow keys are just responding to move the focus box. tried to make some setting change to the "Arrow/SET shotcuts", but still not able to get this function
#15
got it from the user guide, thanks.

in 60D, I can assign the arrow key for such function

I am sorry, but which is the AV button?

I am using 60D, have been spending too much time to take a picture and then go through the menu and set the custom white balance.

it will be good if we can just point to something white/grey and click a button, and then it sets the custom white balance with reference to that area.

certainly I am not taking raw video, I need quick setup of custom white balance so I can start taking video as soon as possible.

Feature Requests / Re: Optional Image Encryption

glad to see progress in this thread, I just don't know why I am not getting any positive comment in my previous post. thanks g3gg0, looking forward to see it going to 60D.

Feature Requests / Re: encrypting photo like using OSK-E3
December 13, 2013, 09:31:32 AM
yes, I know the verification function is already broken in. While the encryption is still good.

I read this from another site
http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/33902/do-any-dslrs-offer-in-camera-file-encryption

"This would prevent self-incrimination, for example if your camera is seized and the photos therein are used as evidence against you."

or maybe a simpler way, if the playback is not displaying the photo, this should be avoiding a lots of trouble. other might just use the playback function to check your camera, if they are not seeing anything, you will not be bothered.

Feature Requests / encrypting photo like using OSK-E3

just like OSK-E3 designed to encrypt photo.

would ML perform some kind of encryption to the photo?

and that decryption can be done when it is copied to computer and with proper decryption key.

Feature Requests / Re: DNG instead of CR2

CR2 should be smaller in size, and you can certainly convert it later in computer with adobe DNG converter. Is there a special reason to save DNG in-camera?

Feature Requests / Re: dual shutter speed
December 02, 2013, 08:40:30 AM
correct me if I am wrong, there is electronic first curtain in live view mode.

if we can make the first curtain running in two different timing, like the odd lines are initialized earlier for longer shutter speed, the even lines are initialized later for shorter shutter speed. and then the physical shutter curtain end the exposure, we will be able to have dual shutter speed in one single picture.

thanks Marsu42. yes, the combine Av/Tv with ISO bracketing is good.

however, I am not sure how much better it can be comparing to dual ISO, could be better shadow, color and DR.

in the case of bright sunlight
ISO 100 f4 1/1600s

If Dual ISO use ISO 1600, which is +4 stops

It might yield the same exposure for ISO 100 at 1/100s, which is +4 stops also.

so it is comparing ISO 1600 at 1/1600s, to ISO 100 at 1/100s.

ISO 100 at 1/100s should be having better tonal range and color sensitivity, and might give better DR also when combining.

It also hold true if you are doing exposure bracketing, if object motion is not an issue, and you are using a tripod, most of the people will do Tv bracketing instead of ISO bracketing.

Feature Requests / dual shutter speed

instead of dual ISO for different exposure in one single picture.

would it be possible to have dual shutter speed in one single shot? certainly it is not possible with mechanical shutter curtain. But with the electronic first curtain, would it be possible?

with this, in very bright light condition, we can shoot at ISO 100, half of the lines are at 1/4000, half of the lines are at 1/125.

I am not sure how much benefit to the picture quantity comparing to use dual ISO in this situation.
