Dear fellow magicians, it's a been a while since my last post...
But a few weeks ago I finally had the opportunity to dust off my magic 5D again.

I'm still amazed by the results I get with this modest setup:

Hardware:

  • 5D Mark III
  • Yashinon-ds 50mm 1.9
ML settings:

  • 10 bit
  • 59.94 fps override
  • 1440x672 -> 1440x1200
Workflow:

  • MLVFS
  • Davinci
  • Premiere/After Effects
  • MediaEncoder
Neither a tripod nor a gimbal was used, all of the clips where shot handheld on my skates.
More detailed insights about my workflow can be found in my last posts.

Enjoy and feel free to comment or criticize!

Feature Requests / Correct Framing in 3x Crop Mode
July 06, 2020, 12:48:20 PM
I just stumbled across this forum's section and I couldn't find any topic related to this subject.

As I explained in this post (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=23258.msg217369#msg217369),
I'm a passionate user of ML and its wonderful Crop Mode and being able to get the exact framing while filming in Crop mode would be a real game changer for me.

I understand that it's very easy and comfortable for me to ask for such a feature but I'd also really appreciate to understand why this isn't actually possible yet ?

Best regards,

I finally got my hands on the beast! After my beloved 7D got stolen, I could upgrade to the 5D Mark III since my boss would sell it to me for some overtime work :D

Of course I had to test out the crop_rec experimental build and I have to say that the result is truely amazing. At work we do have the latest RED 8k Helium but the overall result of the 5D on steroids in combination with a good optic and a proper post-production workflow is getting very close to high-standard cinematic cameras! This is just so much fun to shoot with this little beast!!

SPECS:

  • shot on the 5D Mark III with a sigma art 35mm and a 64gb Lexar 1066x CF-Card
  • shot in in 3520x1320 in 10bit-lossless at 23,976 fps using the crop_rec module (so I could get around 85mbps continuous recording at that framerate)
  • The files were mounted w/ MLVFS, graded in DaVinci, exported to DNxHR HQX 10bit, edited in Premiere and finally exported to 4K DNxHR HQX 10bit.

I'm sorry for YT's little purple color shift but I hope you guys enjoy it and I'd be glad to get some feedback!

Share Your Videos / Well, the 7D back at it again!
September 04, 2018, 10:24:37 PM
First of all, I'm going to ask u guys to not tear apart my video because of the tremendous amount of anti-aliasing and moire!
This is not due to my workflow nor the 4K-upscale, unfortunately it's just the 7D sensor in combination with ML...

Nonetheless, everything was shot on the 7D with a sigma art 35mm in 1738x869 in 14bit at 23,976 fps (some 5x crop clips in 2400x1200), mounted w/ MLVFS, graded in DaVinci, exported to DNxHR 444 10bit to Premiere and finally exported to h.264 in 4K w/ a CBR of 100mbps.
I again used @wangtrirat workflow to emulate a Arri Alexa look.

Hope you guys enjoy it and I'd be glad to get some feedback!

Share Your Videos / The 7D still competing!

So, this time I tried to bypass the serious amount of YT compression (which is huge w/ 1080p) so I did what is forbidden and upscaled my video to 4K and uploaded it :-X

It really makes a difference! I tried to avoid this upscaling-trick but it's the best solution I've found yet... You can check it out with the previous videos on my account, which look nearly horrible after uploading compared to this one.

Everything was shot on the 7D with a sigma art 35mm in 1738x869 in 14bit at 23,976 fps (some 5x crop clips in 2400*1200), mounted w/ MLVFS, graded in DaVinci, exported to DNxHR 10bit to Premiere and finally exported to h.264 in 4K w/ a CBR of 100mbps.
I again used @wangtrirat workflow to emulate a Arri Alexa look.

Hope you guys enjoy it and I'd be glad to get some feedback!

Share Your Videos / A 7D in its best conditions
July 07, 2018, 01:29:31 PM
Here we go again!

I again used @wangtrirat workflow to emulate the Arri Alexa look and given the amount of light available in the scene because of the snow, I could catch some of the best rolling shots I've ever had!

I mounted all the clips w/ MLVFS, graded in DaVinci 14, exported the clips to DNxHR 444 10bit, made the edit in Premiere and exported the final edit again to DNxHR 444 10bit.

Everything was shot in 1728x864 at 23,976fps on a 35mm Sigma Art lens, which I adore in combination with my 7D since I only get the best of it due to the crop factor.

I'm a bit disappointed of youtube's compression and I'd really love to get some tips from u guys on how to get the best uploads settings for YT. This time I uploaded the 6gB file in DNxHR but I'm still getting a poor result. I've seen people upscaling it to 4K but isn't there any other workaround ? Please help me guys because my DNxHR file looks way better than the uploaded one and I would love to share it with you.

Those were unfortunatly the last clips I could get before my precious camera got stolen... Hope you guys enjoy it and tell me what you think!

Share Your Videos / 7D Arri Alexa Emulation
May 20, 2018, 11:43:25 PM
Last September @wangtrirat had the kindness to share his workflow to emulate an Arri Alexa out of an 5DmIII. Thank you very much for that. I can't believe what's coming out of my little 7D now thanks to that workaround.

I mounted all the clips w/ MLVFS, graded in DaVinci 14, exported to some uncompressed 10bit format from Quicktime and then exported H.264 out of the Adobe Media Encoder before uploading it to vimeo.

Everything was shot in 1728x864 at 23,976fps on a 20mm 2.8 canon lens.

I tried to get that analog film look. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do.

This time around I kept it very simple :

All the footage you will visualize in this little video was shot in 1728 × 864 (max. resolution), exported to ProRes4444444444 in C-log using MlRawViewer and put into a 1080 timeline in Premiere WITHOUT any strechting NOR grading, so you guys could judge for yourselves what the (lovely) 7D is capable of :)

Enjoy and feel free to comment!

(It's also the first time I made a dedicated soundtrack for a video)

Thanks again to ML for making all of this possible.

Hello dear ML-Community! I'm new here, 23 years young but it's been a while that I've been enjoying this wonderful little piece of software that is ML on my beloved 7D.

I thought it was about time to share some of the work I did thanks to the enabled RAW-possibilities:

https://vimeo.com/198382823

Every clip was captured with an Canon EF 20mm 1:2.8 optic, custom neutral picture profile and using the ML .mlv-format, resolutions of 1728x864 & 2400x1200.

Using MlRawViewer, I applied a 3D-LUT, made some minor exposure corrections, exported most of the clips in C-log to AppleProRes 4444 and used Premiere for the cut. I'm pretty happy with the results I got straight out of the MlRawViewer.

I hope you guys enjoy this and I'd be glad to get some feedback!

Thanks again to ML for making all of this possible.
