General Help Q&A / In camera LUT for exposure?
January 03, 2018, 01:23:12 AM
Is there a possibility for this? I would love to make some good B&W LUTs and then in LIVE VIEW be able to expose (still mode) a frame to be able to get better outcomes. Is this possible in ML? I don't need LIVE VIEW while shooting video, this inquire is only for the exposure settings.

Thanks!

Highly unscientific pixel peping test of resolution with Canon 5D mark III and Otus primes. How sharp can a 5D3 be with sharp primes?

Download source file: 1080p (1,8 GB Prores 4444)

Canon 5D3 with 1.1.3 firmware and Magic Lantern Crop_rec module.
Zeiss Otus 55mm in crop rec and in 1080p 3x3 binary.
Zeiss Otus 28mm in crop rec, lastly a flairtest.
Canon CN-E 14mm, lasty a flairtest.
In the end you find a 100% crop comparison.

Interesting that Otus is nearly totally resistant to flairs.

Hope someone find it interesting. And download if you can. Sorry but I forgot to take a closeup of a character...

If some one has a resolution chart with a Alexa or such (not Red) and Master primes or such Zeiss, that would be really interesting to compare to.

Hi!

Not sure where to place this thread, but Ill try here. In some weeks I will start a production with a budget around $50K. I first planed to rent an Amira with good PL optics. But I started to question the impact it had on the budget and salaries etc. Since I don't believe I can't produce a good studio production with a 5D3 and maybe Otus optics. I thought as a editor and directing with improvisation that a multi camera ML Crop_rec would be nearly as good and if not better with the editing possibilities.

But there are the problems, camera stops functioning (happened two times in one year of work), restart, batteries in and out etc. That can't be accepted in this production. They must work (will bring three 5D3 with ML and correct settings) and two will constantly run. The takes will be around 2-10 minutes so card and overheating shouldn't be such a problem. But from your experience, is it to risky?

The setup will be, two running 5D3 with each 128-256Gb CF. Backup of cards, often offloading, not waiting etc. Tripods on mostly all shots. Some dolly. Precise lightning for a multi camera shoot. Lenses will be, 2x Otus 28mm, 2x Milvus 15mm, Otus 55mm.

Tests with the lenses on the setup, resolution chart and flair tests: https://vimeo.com/240315090

What do you think?
Thanks!

This was quite a long project, kind pf doc-commercial. It was shoot from time to time over 5 months. I shoot mostly with a 5D3 and my Canon FD lens set. I found the images some times to be a little soft, and some times I was a bad cinematographer, focus pull etc. But in the end the image is quite rich. I can't recommend shooting something like this with Raw, it's just to risky, card running out happen more than 10 times. Since I had to keep recording. But what do you think? It's in Swedish so not so easy for some of you to understand, but imagewize and music is universal. I found the Crop_Rec to be very good for the editing, leaving me with more choices which is usually good.

Movie is about a group of people who has mental illness in different variables. And often feel they are being left out of possibilities in school or in work place. The title is Våga Prata, which translates to something like: Dare to Talk.

Hi!

Like many I was looking forward to the release of a stable build of BM Davinci Resolve 14. This post is if you already have big grading projects and thinks of competing them in 14. I think this is a critical function for a upgrade of a suite? Anyhow every project crashes on 14. If I create a new one maybe only maybe it will work. It's to damn stupid of them to release this "stable" build and remove the older 12.5 from their download section.

I must recomend not to transfer until it is proven stable for 95% of users. Bunch of shit. Really unfortunate since al the new functions are very welcomed!

I'm looking for a lens that is either zoom or prime, but has AF and is as much cinematic as possible, good flares if so or so so. Price range is 800$ used.

Any recommendations? I mostly use 50mm. I'm asking since I only shoot with manual lenses I don't know anything about Canon EF optics. Recommendations much appreciated!

Hi!

I use a old version of a Cavision system for my 5D3 rig, the purpose is to have a Mattebox, FF and other possibilities of a rod system. But is it fast, easy to use? No, no, no. It nearly sucks, the matte box is stuck, the change from shooting stills to mount it back to shooting video is taking far to much time.

The rig:

What are you using? I'm looking for a system much like previous Zacuto settings. Easy of use and fast to go from Video to stills.

Hardware and Accessories / EF-S for crop mode/zoom mode?
February 12, 2017, 07:58:28 AM
For example, have anyone tried a Canon EF-S 10-22mm, or other lenses while doing crop view on a Full frame Canon? Looking for ways to get a wider field of view..

Thanks for a reply!

Share Your Videos / Commercial - 5D3 - Zeiss CP.2
February 08, 2017, 01:53:57 AM
Short commercial done with ML 10bit and 14bit. One lens Zeiss CP.2 35mm and one shot with Canon IS zoom. Shoot in 2 days, then edited with little freedom from client, would have cut more off beat if it was up to me. Given the tempo of the music thous beats it nearly brook my leg.. The last shots with the cargo truck and at the harbor was nearly ungradable. Had mistakenly kept inside tungsten WB whiteout seeing it, I can say, RAW didn't help much there. Those differens in post work messed up the image..

But the team effort was great and justified to pull this of, either me or them weren't given much of a budget so more or less minimum pay.

Also some DJI shots to steer the pot.
Workflow: MLV/MLV lite, MLVFS - Davinci ProRes - FCP 7 - XML - Davinci grade and export.

Having a gig this week and will try to shoot the job with either 12bit raw or latest Nightly build. But how often have ML break down during a shoot? What I'm asking is should I take a b-cam 5d3 with me if the primary fails? Since this has never occurred for me I wonder if it happened to you?

Thanks!

Hi!
The question is if anyone have a clue if there is even a possibility to use a LUT in camera with ML installed? Have anyone tried this?

Hardware and Accessories / Investing in a CR.2 lens?
December 08, 2016, 03:08:07 PM
Hi everyone!

Recently I've been digging into crop view shooting and many of my lenses are pretty soft.
But since I want long focus, with deep focus scenes, long focus wheels etc CR.2 seems like the best option? Currently looking at the 15mm F2.9 here.

Do anyone have a propper focus shoot with a CR.2 lens preferably a wide angle and could offer me a DNG to play around with? If you have shoot in daytime all the better!

Trying to tune in right shutter for shooting 24p in these light environments.. I have tried this source:

But without any success. For now only 32/33fps worked to eliminating pulse or so. Any ideas if you can't controll the lights?

Got a tip for 1/50, will try the out!

Just finished a modification to make a start/stop button on the rig handle. All for running more seamlessly on 5D3.

The result is very comfortable, finger wise, but there's some software problems. I have assigned the shutter trigger for movie mode inside Canon menu. But when I start record I can't make Canon firmware/ML to stop recording with the trigger. Only by pressing the Start/Stop button on the body recording stops.

Also the cam needs to restart to make the trigger work again. Otherwise there's only showing exposure info when pressing the trigger. As seen above in lower middle section of the LCD. All problems is the same in Canon's video mode as well in ML.

Anyone have any idea to make it work? If so very much appreciated!

Have you noticed that Vimeo don't keep the grading linear over time? After some months of uploaded footage the highlights get overexposed and the blacks crushed.. I investigated this before but didn't come up with a answer.. any ideas from you people?

Hardware and Accessories / Diary of 5D3: removing OLPF
October 18, 2016, 08:04:37 PM
This is a diary for my Canon 5D mark III which no longer is a standard version of 5D3.

Today I got a glad email from Rüdiger Maerz service center, that my cam is ready and now no longer have the first OLPF.
The one that functions as automatic cleaning when powering on the 5D.
The glas also functions as a AA filter that functions to smoothen lines and other artifacts lines can make In CMOS sensors.

Actual OLPF of my 5D3..

But the first OLPF also can be questioned, since the cam already have one, after the IR-CUT filter, the OLPF is positioned infront
of the sensor as the second OLPF. Canon sure was making sure the 5D would have no AA issues. The problem, it slightly blurring
the image in order to avoid moiré and aliasing effects at the cost of resolution and sharpness.

The reason for doing this on my own behalf is I only use old and "soft lenses". Primary Canon FD primes that also is converted to
EF mount. All for making lesser glas interfere with sensor technology and how the lens glas actually look/perform.

Since I love to build and experiment with technical "toys" this was a great find when reading James Miller post when removing the
first AA and IR-CUT filers. The reason for keeping the IR-CUT filter is even though you loos details when using IR-CUT in low light,
when shooting daylight it's to much hassle to give up one filter slot on the matte box for a IR-CUT filter. So I chose to keep this one.
If you what to know more about IR-CUT and benefits/problems of removing it pleas read here. Of course there is posts that say the
operation is unnecessary, but that comes down to that they don't like to clean the sensor them selfes.

Not mine but dissembled 6D, for you to see the mess thats inside our cameras..

I will post films when starting to shoot again. Hopefully I will master the art of cleaning sensors, or the image will suffer..

Hi!

Do anyone have any experience of using Tilta rec handle together with ML? Wonder it ML will record when using LANC controller?

Raw Video / ExFat not working on Mark III
July 07, 2016, 11:15:20 PM
Hi!

I use Mark III with latest build on firmware 1.1.3. And I use El Capitan for formatting my CF to ExFat. But somehow I can't get 5D3 to work with ExFat. Anybody here who can help me? For formatting the card I used this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7eEb2x3tAM

Thanks for any help!

Hi!

I have some Canon FD primes that has been converted to EF. I use them on 5D3. The 50mm has the glas so close to the mirror so it often conflicts while rising or lowering. So I wonder is there a hack to lock the mirror upp, even while can goes in to idle mode?

David

Hi!

First time here, but used ML several timed before without troubles. But now I have  my own 8) used Canon 5D mark III and I find it somehow confusing. The most important part for me is to get RAW color working. I use Scandisk CF 128Gb 160MB/s and Scandisk 16Gb UHS-II SDHC 280/250MB/s for ML.

  • I wish to record RAW (1080) and maybe 50fps sometimes but the camera limits the frame rate to 38.x?

  • How come I can't change resolution? It seams limited to 1080p?

  • How do I know it's 14bit RAW?

  • Is the latest nightly build (2016May16) okay? Or would you recommend any other?

  • Is there any guide on recommended settings for the camera prior ML install?
I really feel stupid so I really appreciate any help out there.

Major thanks!
David
