Share Your Videos / 5D3 - Denmark in slowmotion - 48fps
September 05, 2022, 08:30:18 PM
Since a long time a wanted to use a ML highspeed mode for a video. My last denmark holiday was perfect for this, because it was very windy. So I could capture a lot of motion - perfect for slowing down to 50%, 24fps in post.

I used a Danne build on my 5D3 - not the latest (I forgot to update, ups). Recording was pretty stable, using CardSpanning, 1920x960 (2:1), 14bit.

Procecssing was done with MLVApp, with the new AgX feature enabled.

Share Your Videos / Croatia - Makarska - in 5.7K
August 29, 2021, 11:29:05 AM
Danne's great 5D3 5.7K build runs so stable over here. So I decided to use it a first time for my holiday video. Oh yes... some diskspace was needed for it, and also "some" time to process it. But in the end it is worth every byte and minute - at least I think so. In the end I recorded ~350GB for the short video and processed all clips in MLVApp. For fighting against the ugly YT-compression, I decided to process in 5.7K and upscaled the final to 8K - but even then, YT killed so much detail (e.g. my generated grain is 100% filtered by YT).

Share Your Videos / 5.7K in day and night (5D3)

No matter how much I play around with my 5D3 - I always come back to 5.7K mode, which is awesome. Now I did two very different tests: one at very low light and one with as much light as possible.

This video is recorded at ISO1000..ISO4000 depending on the clip, with the EF 50mm f/1.4, always full open.
https://youtu.be/69zvr4VFkSw

And this video - the complete opposite - I recorded at ISO100, with the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II, also always full open, but with a VND8..128 (mostly at the dark side).
https://youtu.be/oNF-c6YX7-8

As always I processed all clips with MLVApp only. I exported unsqueezed and downscaled to 3840x1560. For the night video I recorded dark frames in order to kill all static noise. For the dynamic noise I used the RBF in MLVApp and the (nice) bad YouTube compression :P

I am still very impressed by the 5D3 5.7K anamorphic mode! Thank you again Danne!

We now recorded a music video with this mode - just to try out how good this could work. We recorded 6 takes à 3:30min. And I was impressed: I forgot to enable card spanning, but it worked anyway, continuously! I got 120GB on my CF's for 21min, so we recorded about 95MB/s. The setting was 1920x2340 pixels (resulting in 5760x2340) and 12bit.

In post, I corrected and graded the footage in MLVApp only and exported to 4K.

This is the next preset of Danne's build I wanted to give a try on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. The UHD mode records at 3840x1536 @23.976fps. At 12bit I got a minimum of 15sec, but often way longer than that. The crop factor should be somewhere around 1.5x, so you get a bit more sensor area than APS-C and again a bit more than you get with 4K from EOS 5D Mark IV (non RAW).

The biggest disadvantage with that mode is, that you have to disable the liveview while recording. Otherwise the cam will stop after 2 or 3 seconds. This means you have to plan your shot very well before recording. I tried to do so on my Glidecam - difficult but possible.

There was no rescaling done - this is the original resolution coming from the camera! And the footage was not sharpened.

Gear used:
Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM
K&F Variable ND8-ND128
Audio-Technica Pro-24 (modded)
Glidecam HD-2000
Lexar 1066x 32GB
SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB 170MB/s

When comparing this with my last small test video in 5.7K anamorphic mode, my conclusion is:
5.7K looks more cinematic to me, while UHD is without doubt sharper (but no idea if you see it, because of youtube compression). 5.7K mode uses the full sensor width and has a nice field of depth. In UHD mode you'll have to focus very very well and it shows the smallest weekness of your lens.

This is the first test video with my new old Canon EOS 5D Mark III. I am blown away by Danne's video modes, especially this 5.7K anamorphic mode which uses the full sensor width (big thank you, Danne!). This makes the footage look very cinematic!

With this mode I got 1920x2332(*) (unsqueezed to 5760x2332) @ 23.976fps and 12bit lossless. And the best: continuous recording!!! This is possible because of the latest SD overclocking and card spanning features (thanks to everyone involved!). So the CF card writes about 70MB/s and the SD about 50MB/s at the same time.

MLVApp is able to merge the two files (MLV+M00) from the two cards. The entire video was processed and color corrected to ProRes4444 with MLVApp only, at original resolution (unsqueezed). There was no sharpening applied. The final cut was upscaled to 8K for youtube using ffmpeg with lanzcos resizer.

Gear used:
Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM
K&F Variable ND8-ND128
Audio-Technica Pro-24 (modded)
Glidecam HD-2000
Lexar 1066x 32GB
SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB 170MB/s

(*) the mode is updated to 1920x2340 now (5760x2340)

I got an external microphone for my cams and I have a problem with it, when using with my 5D Mark II. For the first few frames the signal is as expected, then it feels like digital gain goes to max - just for 5..20 frames (length different in each clip), and after this the audio level is as expected again. This only happens for the very first clip after switching the cam on. The second clip+ is okay.
Has someone had this problem before and knows what's the reason?

My ML setup:
- standard nightly build
- modules mlv_rec + mlv_snd enabled
- Analog Gain = 32dB
- Digital Gain = all off
- Input Source = external stereo (it is a stereo microphone)
- Wind Filter = off
- Mic Power = on or off (Mic has battery but alternatively works with phantom. Problem is for both combinations identical.)
- MLV Sound = on
- RAW Video = on

When I disable RAW Video, but use ML, this problem is gone (h.264). Same, if I use the same cam without ML. If I try the same with my EOSM, there is also no problem at all.

So I also tried to toggled more or less all RAW Video options, but without any success.

Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

Edit: when enabling AGC, the signal looks the opposite:

Happy new year to you all!
In the last days of the old year I found some time to record some clips with my two new old lenses, which I have since a month:
- Carl Zeiss Jena Prakticar 20mm 2.8 MC
- Carl Zeiss Jena Prakticar 50mm 1.4 MC (first version with thorium coating)
Both lenses are around 35..40 years old and were very expensive here (Jena is just an hour by car) when they were build.
At least the 20mm is a real diva: I got it a month ago, but I had to learn since that how to use it... really difficult to handle 😜 But after you understood what happens, you'll have a lot of fun with it. Problem is an extreme field curvature and a lot of (more or less wonderful) flares... Therefor I really like the colors.

Share Your Videos / Croatia with 5D MarkII & EOS M
November 24, 2019, 01:17:52 PM
Here comes another holiday video, all recorded in Magic Lantern RAW. These were 14 days in Croatia. We visited the Nature Park Učka and the National Parks Paklenica and Plitvice, as well as many Towns, Villages, Islands and Winnetou Film Locations. In sum we drove around 2000km by car to see all that (just in Croatia).

The gear used for this film was:
- Canon EOS 5D Mark II (mostly) (@1856x1044)
- Canon EOS M (just a hand full of clips) (@anamorpic rewire 16:9)
- EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM II
- EF 100mm f/2.0
- EF-M 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS
- GlideCam HD2000
- NexToDi ND2901
- ND Filters

In sum I recorded 380GB RAW clips. All clips have been graded with MLVApp only. That's my first video, I was using the new MLVApps CA and Color Moiree Reducer (upcoming MLVApp v1.10). I am really happy with it!
It took me around one month to edit all what you see right now, until I was happy with it... I hope you like it too! :)

The video was recorded around Elgersburg, Germany, Thuringia.

All clips are filmed at very soft and bright apertures between f/1.0 and f/1.4 (thanks to the speedbooster). I used the 5K anamorphic mode at 2.39:1, resulting in a native resolution of 1488x1870, unsqueezed to 4464x1870 (but finally downscaled to 3840x1608).

Goal was to try out the brand new resizing algorithm AVIR with much better anti-aliasing capabilites, which came to MLVApp (not in official builds yet, but you can compile yourself). The algorithm is used when exporting with Apple AVFoundation codecs on OSX. "Stair effects" are reduced to a minimum with that. And from now on we can have 12bit resized ProRes4444 footage (OSX only), with slightly better color than exporting with ffmpeg!

I recorded all clips hand held... so sorry for the shaky footage. Next time I'll use a tripod/monopod/glidecam again

Gear used:
- Canon EOS M with Danne's Aug31 ML build
- Viltrox Speedbooster
- EF 50mm f/1.4 (results in 35mm f/1.0)
- ND64 filter

Share Your Videos / 5D Mark II on the Seychelles
November 29, 2018, 10:36:52 PM
In the month of May, I spent my vacation in the Seychelles. It took weeks to scroll through the 550GB of MLV files I recorded there... the final holiday video was finished in the last summer days. Now Ilia brought the new color processing to MLVApp. I tested with some clips and was so impressed by the colors, so I decided to create another shorter public version. Here it is:

I am not 100% satisfied by the smoothness of my glidecam movement - I probably should have balanced it better. But the climate has been a heavy burden on the Glidecam too. After one week the ball bearing was rusty and my only chance to repair was to steal some drops of hydraulic oil from my rental car...  ;D
Gear used is: 5D Mark II, EF 16-35 2.8 L II, EF 100mm 2.0 and a GoPro 3 for the underwater and cycle clips. All clips from the EOS are processed and color corrected using MLVApp only.

Make sure to watch in maximum resolution youtube offers... the compression is... ARGGHH

Hello,

this is the last music video I did with my band. It is filmed 100% with magic lantern mlv on a EOS 5D Mark II. While filming all worked like a charme. Then I had big problems (crashes) with mlvfs - 200GB of raw files were to much - so I seperated the files to 7 ~30GB folders. Then it worked perfectly and I could grade and cut in Resolve. Thanks to the magic lantern community! Your work is great!
The songs theme is a difficult one: violence against children and women.
But I hope you enjoy the video anyway!
