Hey Folk,
I'm selling *******, and I figured I'd give you all a heads up about it.

Thanks,

Here is another quick montage of clips we filmed in 5D3 RAW using the camera gimbal that I built.

#3
Here is a link to the first "Impossible Shot" that we did using a custom/homebrew (MōVI) camera gimbal that I built, and a 5D3 shooting raw.

Also, here is a link to a video of the gimbal that I built.

I had so much fun messing around with the Magiclantern firmware on my Mk3 last year that THIS year, I decided to start playing around with other camera components too.

Here is a link to my Mk3 shooting raw video on a MōVI-like camera gimbal that I assembled, and wired.  Hoping to have lots more footage to share soon.

General Chat / VGA output???
January 24, 2014, 07:23:19 PM
Hey,
So I just hooked up my 5d3 to an old steadicam that only has VGA, and my screen is full of text, ML Asserts, and when I go to press record to shoot some raw video, the camera locks up and shuts down.

What is going on?  Is this a known issue?  Is there a way to get the camera to display over VGA and still record in RAW?

Thanks.

General Development / Sync Peep Syncing
January 04, 2014, 02:59:09 PM
There has been a lot of discussion about the best way to sync audio for ML raw with an external recording device, and lately I have been experimenting with using the sync beeps with a wireless transmitter.

Over the summer, I filmed a project where we used ML raw, and clap slated every single shot with a smart slate.  That process is OK, and the best for complete confidence... but it also takes a lot of time, and extra footage/HD space too.

TC would be the best option, and it is in development...

I'd like to know if anyone else is using the beeps to sync, and what results they are having.  I'm using a Tascam DR-680, and feeding the beep onto the 6th channel via a wireless transmitter.  What I am finding that the beeps are around 7 frames off from the start time of raw_rec.mo (I'm using V1).  That would be perfectly fine if I was to use that for a project... but does it stay consistent? What are your experiences?

Thanks.

Duplicate Questions / Working MLV workflows for OSX
December 13, 2013, 01:01:49 AM
Hey,
I've been rather on-again-off-again with the new MLV raw format, and it seems like the information gets a bit muddled on the forum as to what workflows are available and actually working for people.

Would ya'll mind posting your workflows and links to where we can download the latest versions of the software for OSX?

Thanks so much!

General Chat / *BROKEN* EOS Utility & USB Controllers
November 30, 2013, 05:56:22 AM
Ok.  So I just bought one of those USB controllers off of eBay (don't ask me why, it just sounded cool to be able to move my buttons down to the handle) but when I plugged it in to the camera, the system went totally haywire!  The camera's screen started flashing, and the battery had to be pulled to get the camera to turn back on.

At first, I thought it was the shitty Chinese USB controller... but I then decided to plug the camera (it's a 5d3, btw) into my laptop to see if I could use EOS Utility but it did the exact same thing.  More importantly... EOS Utility shut down saying it couldn't recognize the camera.

Is this a known issue? Is there a way to fix this?  Thanks.

General Chat / Premiere 7.1 Pink Issue
November 01, 2013, 04:14:01 PM
Hey,
So as everyone is finding out, it seems that long waited upgrade to Premiere with native CDNG support has a big bug for MLV shooter...  the files look totally pink when opened in Premiere directly.

there is a forum going on Adobe's site http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1326153?tstart=0, but I was hoping people could post their results here to figure out if ALL magic lantern CDNGs were the issue, or if it has something to do with the operating system and converter.

The less discussion the better, this is just to get an idea if the issue is present everywhere.

General Chat / Simple Wired Remote 5D3?
October 20, 2013, 06:32:16 AM
Hey,
So I just happened to find this video of a guy who built a wired remote for his t2i, and I didn't even know this was a function on Magic Lantern.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsX60f_cdK0

Would it be possible to use this on a 5D3?  I have a right angle HDMI that blocks my regular 3-pin release port, so I've been interested in finding another option..

Thanks.

General Chat / Latest MLV_REC.MO
October 03, 2013, 06:18:46 PM
Hey,
So... I'm trying to find the latest compiled MLV (raw 2) module on the site, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.  I know lots of experimenting is going on, and it hasn't been incorporated into the regular nightly builds yet... but I've got some free time, and I'm itching to mess around it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

General Help Q&A / Latest 5D Mark III version??
October 02, 2013, 11:59:49 PM
Hey,
So... I've had to step away from the site for a bit, and now that I have some time to get back into it... it is as confusing as ever! :-/

Where can I find the latest, greatest build for the 5D Mark 3?  *The most recent posted (in the usual spot) is from August 21st...

How are thing going with MLV?  Is there a viable OSX conversion tool yet?

General Chat / ML's Goal?
August 04, 2013, 06:58:45 PM
I've been using the ML Raw hack now since May, and I'm wondering what the ultimate goal of the project really is?

Obviously it is about adding features to these cameras that weren't included and even limited for marketing, but what is the end goal?  Are WE (the users and developers) attempting to make these more professional, practical, and useable so that smaller budgeted projects and independent filmmakers have access to high image quality?

To me, it seems like ML has gotten stuck on just pushing numbers lately when there are serious functionality issues that need to be solved.
Issues like...

- moving the record/buffer information to a place that doesn't block the screen
- storing WB, Picture Profile, & image finetuning information so these images are WYSIWYG right after conversion
- adding free run timecode jam syncing capabilities so that external audio recorders can be used more easily
- internal audio recording/syncing
- addressing the issues with HDMI output, playback
- standardizing the .MLV file format so that applications can be created to read the recorded information without the need for conversion to .DNG

To allow this camera to be used more widely on productions, it seems that all of these issues should be address before experimenting on speed increases for slower cards and dynamic range hacks (a1ex you rule, btw!).

I love what the developers have done, and I want to use the 5D3 with the ML Raw hack on everything I do.  But the perception of being a "hack," "nerdy," complicated thing that will "make your camera explode" is a hard one to crack when these issues aren't being addressed.

Am I wrong?

Thanks.
#16
Hey,
A week ago we finished up shooting a narrative short with the 5D3 Raw firmware, and the #1 thing that made it difficult was the placement of the record information on the display.

Often times, the display text would end up over a key focus point, or over an actor's face for the entire scene!!

Can it be moved off frame somehow?  Above the frame (over hdmi out) would be a great place... but where it sits now, it is literally blocking the action.

The bottom of the screen would be a better place... if it can't be moved to outside the frame.
#17
Would it be possible to include a feature in Magic Lantern that would allow you to sync two 5D Mark IIIs up to do 3D?

#18
So I just finished up a week long, professional, narrative shoot with the 5D3 ML Raw Hack where we filmed on 6 x 1000x 64gb KomputerBay cards for 5 Days for a total of 2.6 TB of data, and some amazing looking images.  I'll be writing something up to share my experiences with the hack soon... but I just wanted to note for everyone: The camera did not explode!!!  Even after running the six cards for a total of 42 rolls... there doesn't seem to be any issues at all.

It is also important to note - many times we were filming in direct sunlight, in HOT rooms with NO AC, and with plenty of lights making the room even hotter!

Stay tuned, and I'll talk about everything I learned.

Feature Requests / Camera as TC generator?
July 04, 2013, 02:50:34 PM
So listen, I know it "isn't possible" to have the camera record TC during RAW recording... but I have a thought about how to aid in syncing to a secondary source, and I wanted to run it by y'all.

Could the camera OUTPUT a timecode signal (Time of Day) via the headphone jack while recording raw?

It's be similar to this thing http://www.lockitbuddy.com/website/ but instead of using the MIC input, you'd use the headphone jack to output to a wireless audio transmitter, and record that signal an open channel on your audio recorder.  *For example, taking up 1 track on your Zoom H4n for TC sync?

Could that work?  Would people be interested in such a feature?  It would really be helpful to not have to slate every RAW shot.

Thoughts?
#20
So... I'm gearing up to shoot a short film on the 5D3 RAW starting on monday.  The one thing that still confuses though is where the remaining time is located on the card...

Any clues?

Feature Requests / RAW Playback on Rear Display
July 03, 2013, 04:40:45 AM
Since RAW playback isn't working on HDMI, would it be possible to get the rear display to turn on without having to unplug the HDMI?  It gets a little annoying.

General Development / RAW Desktop Playback OSX
July 02, 2013, 06:46:30 PM
Hey,
I remember seeing someone developing a RAW desktop playback app a while back... any work been done on that lately?

*I'm speaking of an application that just played the .RAW file for review.

General Help Q&A / What is happening here?
June 26, 2013, 04:26:03 AM
What is this?  This is happening to every 5-10 frames when I pass my raw footage through RAWMagic Beta 7b, then process in Resolve in the BMD Film color and apply ANY Lut, but this is BMD to Rec 709...

What is this and why is it happening?  It didn't happen on June 19th's build.  I just upgraded to June 25th and RAWMagic 7b...

am I doing something wrong?

*This is a one frame to the next comparison.

General Chat / June 21st Build Display Info?
June 21, 2013, 04:54:48 PM
I'm sure it has something to do with the buffer, but what is with the new colored lines above the write info?

Not that I don't like it... it looks like something from Star Trek TNG. ;-)

So... what solutions are out there for transferring and backing up media out in the field?

I'm looking for a dock-type device that doesn't require any more power than what is provided from either the USB 3.0 or Firewire 800 port.

What are you'all using?

General Chat / filled 6 cards with NO PROBLEMS!
June 19, 2013, 02:04:41 PM
I wanted to note, for those out there who still believe that this will "make your camera explode" or somehow cause it to overheat...

I just filled 6 x 64GB KomputerBay 1000X cards straight with absolutely no issues whatsoever.  That was 72mins of recording, with breaks only to quickly change the card when it filled up.  (I was testing my new cards before a project gets underway next week).

In all of the 72mins, there are no dropped frames, or pink lines... and the camera barely got warm!

GO MAGIC LANTERN TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!

Feature Requests / LiveView Preset Switching on Rec
June 14, 2013, 11:57:30 PM
Hey,
So I'm noticing a lot better results with fewer corrupt frames with Global Draw off (duh), but I like having the data on screen (especially the NOT RECORDING box) in between shots.  Would it be possible to have it set to switch to a different present (one with GD off) when I hit record?

Post-processing Workflow / DaVinci Resolve LUTs
June 14, 2013, 06:49:00 PM
Hey,
What LUTs are you'all using with your 5D3 footage in Resolve?

So far, I've tested these... want to find one I like.

General Help Q&A / Corrupt Raw Frame repair?
June 14, 2013, 02:39:27 PM
Ok.

So I just did my first test filling up an entire 64gb card, transferring it, convert to Cinema DNG (RAWMagic), and processing it with Resolve lite.  The whole process took about 1hr 10mins - not terrible.  *The easiest part was outputting from Resolve.  Download took the longest, but I've only got a USB 2.0 reader.

The problem that I am seeing is that every so often (maybe once every 3 minutes) I have a corrupt frame - not horrible corrupt, just slightly.

I see this more often when I first start rolling on a shot, but I figured it was the buffer getting up to speed.

Is there anyway to fix these frames?

Feature Requests / Image Finetuning Limits
June 14, 2013, 02:36:57 AM
I was wondering if it would be possible to implement a limiter for the digital ISO in Image Finetuning.

When you are using finetuning to display the corrected ISO for an ETTR style of video shooting, it would be a great help to have the EV adjustment programmed to shut off once a user-determined camera ISO setting was reached.

Setting the EV to go back to 0 if you went past 6400iso in camera and back on if you go below.

Is that possible?

Hardware and Accessories / CF to CF-RAID
June 13, 2013, 07:31:04 PM
I'm just throwing this out there since I haven't seen any threads mentioning it before...

What about a CF to CF-RAID instead of trying to adapt the CF card to SSD?

*I don't know how to accomplish this, it's just an idea.  But it seems like it would be lighter to have 2 or 4 raided CF cards than even 1 SSD.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Davinci Resolve Lite
June 12, 2013, 10:03:33 PM
I'm upgrading my desktop to handle Resolve Lite (needed a new graphics card), and I'm wondering how fast it is transcoding Cinema DNG files for y'all?

I was able to test it on my laptop, and it blew me away (12fps, as compared to forever in AE).

Feature Requests / [DONE] raw_rec on at startup
June 12, 2013, 07:45:39 PM
I've read some discussion about the raw_rec module being able to be set to default to on - if it is done in the coding.

Anyone know how to do that?

Would it make more sense for it to be default ON, allowing the user to either turn it off or unload the module?

Thanks.

General Chat / ETTR & The Canon C300
June 08, 2013, 02:52:19 PM
Ok,
So I'm new to the whole concept of ETTR.  I've always slightly undershot to protect my highlights... but now this is raw, and that seems to change all of the rules.

When I first tried overexposing my shot in raw on my 5D3 and then compared it to how I would normally shoot... i was blown away! As blown-away as I was the first time I saw footage from the C300.

My only concern with ETTR was "how do I explain to a client that the image isn't really blown out???"... then a1ex pointed out that 'Image Finetuning' can be used to display the exposure lower (ML Digital ISO) and it wouldn't effect the raw recording.  I tried it.  It works!

I even tried recording some good'ol h.264, and the exposure compensation in 'Image Finetuning' worked and that image wasn't as noisy as I expected!

That's when it hit me...  this is what cameras like the C300, FS700, F55 are doing to handle the noise and why their images look so amazing.

Well... now we can do that with the 5d3 too.

Lots of people probably already knew that... but I figured it was worth sharing my experience.

Happy Shooting.

Feature Requests / Record Data Placement
June 07, 2013, 04:24:59 PM
As it is now, while recording raw on the 5D3, the recording/display information is in an awkward spot.

Would it be possible to include a feature that lets you move it somewhere else?

Feature Requests / Raw record timer

General Development / Custom Mode 5D3 more buffer?
June 06, 2013, 03:56:46 PM
So I've seen a couple of small posts about this, and so I tried it out...

When you're in custom mode (C1,C2,C3 on the main dial) you get twice the number of buffer stars (**** instead of **), and I don't get any dropped frames on my 5D3 with my KomputerBay 64gb 1000x!

Why is this? What's up with this?  Any of the developers know?

Seems pretty great so far...

Feature Requests / RAW + Settings at Start
June 01, 2013, 03:32:06 PM
Hey,
So we've been testing this sucker for a while now, and the one thing that I'd really like is...

to have RAW on, with my settings (1920,16:9,Skip allow), at start up.  :-)

The modules can be set to autoload, so could the settings for the modules also be saved and loaded with them?  Or at least give us the option?

Thanks,

Is it possible to get the file naming to be more complex, and for the system to display the name of the last file recorded on screen?

Right now, the file naming is coming out as M30_1923.RAW.  Could it be more detailed?  I'd prefer something like JRR_05302013_1923.RAW (JRR - camera name/op initials).  Could we do that?

If it could display the name of the last .RAW file recorded on the screen, that would be invaluable for an assistant to log the footage during a shoot.

Thanks

General Chat / Magic Lantern Cinema Camera?
May 31, 2013, 02:44:30 PM
Hey,
So... I'm just thinking.

Is it about time ML starts thinking about making it's own cinema camera?

What this incredible group of people - developers, tester, thinkers, etc - have been able to do with existing hardware in such a short period of time...
imagine what could be possible if they were to create a completely new system from the ground up!

That is one Kickstarter campaign I would happily fund!

Feature Requests / X for skipped frames
May 30, 2013, 02:17:23 PM
Would it be possible to have the raw2dng converter automatically place an "X" frame in the place of a skipped frame to keep the audio in sync?

As of now, it is just a jump. :-/

I hope to have less and less skipped frames as time goes on... but... if that was possible it would be very helpful.

Thanks for the killer work!

#42
I'm following everything I have read to a T, but when I hit record on my 5D3... it drops 1-2 frames every second.

Any chance we're going to see a simple menu option for this sometime soon? :-/

Feature Requests / Unique File Naming! :
May 25, 2013, 06:10:11 AM
Currently, the file naming structure starts with M0000000.RAW for every role on a newly formatted card.

Would it be possible to implement a file structure that is more complex?

Possibly with a camera name, and numbering that increases from card to card?

I'm thinking people will probably lose footage simply by overwriting it.

Thanks.

Raw Video / [IMPOSSIBLE/PATENTED] RAW to R3D
May 22, 2013, 03:34:35 AM
Hi,
I know you're all hoping that I totally just found an awesome way of converting EOS Raw to Red R3D files... it would be cool wouldn't it?

I didn't.  I'm sorry.

But since we are talking about hacking here... and R3D files are much much much more widely compatible with NLEs... would it be possible?
