General Help Q&A / Re: 5D Mark II Bricked?

Thanks.   Canon USA Service suggested the same.  Pins look OK.

Much appreciated.    Like Narcan for an overdose of stupidity.    Thanks Walter.

WS:  it worked.  Walter, I can' thank you enough.  The original CF card did not work with the fresh install of ML.  I had a few other CF cards that were formatted on the camera and one of those worked fine with a new ML install.   I am reluctant to put the initial CF card back in the camera and will upgrade to a new one of suitable size and speed for ML.

thanks again,
Jim

I'd would rather care about your 5D2. This cam can indeed be damaged by improper card handling.

agreed, I don't want to do any further damage to the camera if the card is shot.  I thought I may have damaged the CF card itself when I first screwed up (I could care less about further damage to the card).

For this special case I suggest to backup ML/Settings directory, delete ML dir (all of it) and autoexec.bin. Then just copy ML content (including autoexec.bin) to card.

thanks again.  The Lexar card is a couple years old but was working fine.  OK to use it for this exercise?  I recall reading that my type of incompetent action can ruin the CF card under certain circumstances.

Will give this a shot later tonight.

...Copy extracted ML build files to card.....

Thanks much WS.

Want to make sure I have the above process correct.  So treat the card as I would a ML update?

Do or should I need to use a different CF card than the one used when the issue started?

My process for a new ML build:
Go to ML downloads; click on Browse nightly builds/select 5D2, then:
•   Simply delete your old Magic Lantern files from your card and copy the new ones.
•   You can keep your configuration files (the ML/SETTINGS directory from your card).

General Help Q&A / 5D Mark II Bricked?
March 02, 2020, 07:53:51 PM
Email of shame...   Was back from an underwater shoot disassembling a lot of gear.  My feeble excuse.   Until now, camera and CF card were in excellent working order order.

My ML CF card was out of the camera while working on some settings.   Forgot to turn the camera off and inserted the CF card with ML while the camera was on.  Closed the door and the camera stayed off.  Camera would not power up with the CF card inserted.

Initially the camera would power on with full functioning menu without the CF card inserted   I got a "No Card" message when powering ON without the card.   I just could not get the camera to power on with the CF card inserted.

I removed the main battery and the time/date battery and let it sit for several hours.  With no battery installed I flipped the power switch between ON and OFF a few times.

Installed a new/fresh time date battery and a good fully charged main battery.  Nothing.   No power with the CF card installed and now no power either with the CF card holder empty.

To make matters worse the 5D2 just went of service with Canon a few weeks ago.  They are not accepting the camera any longer for servicing that would require parts.  If it only needs a firmware flash, they may be willing to do that.   Too much underwater gear to switch away from the 5D2.

Suggestions (other than eBay)?

Jim

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: MLVProducer: [v3171]
October 22, 2017, 07:33:26 PM
Continue to use this amazing tool for my MLV files.  Much appreciated and thanks much.

I also use it to transcode GoPro footage into DNxHD for editing in Davinci Resolve.   Any plans to update so it can output DNxHD in 4k?   I have an underwater shark filming trip coming up and will be shooting in 4k for the first time.

Love the tool.  Am away from my editing computer otherwise would check.

Can MLVP convert h.264 files to DNXhd or hr?

This looks great. I can color correct so much faster in LightRoom than DVR.  Anyone out there with experience with this plugin?

I have been using the EOS HD LUT for a while. On much of my footage I have the hardest time neutralizing the white balance with the EOS LUT. No such problem with the Hunter LUT but it has other issues.  The EOS LUT is probably optimized for the 5d3.  Perhaps 5d2 footage is creating some color balance issues with it.

HDR and Dual ISO Postprocessing / White Balance Data?
November 23, 2016, 06:11:00 PM
Is it possible to get white balance metadata to carryover into the converted file?  It would save a little time setting white balance.

This is amazing work!  Great job and Thanks much.
1.  Need a LUT recommendation for Resolve.  For cdng footage shot on a 5d2.  I set my raw settings to BMD Film and use Hunters LUT for quick basic color correction (not for style).  Hunters LUT does a nice job but is getting old and displays some artifacts.  Other LUTs are not working well. Most make white balance correction very difficult.

2.  Speaking of white balance, how does the Balance/white balance plugin work?  WB is often my most time consuming fix for basic color correction.  Wish it was as quick and simple as WB fix for raw in LightRoom

Apologies if the answer appears above.

Does MLVProducer carry over white balance information in the metadata for the raw file?

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 5D Mark II / 5D2

I have only recently been trying to record decent sound with raw video on my 5D2.  I have good in-camera results with a BeachTek preamp and various microphones with h.264 files.

When recording at 1856x1044/23.9 fps I seem to be loosing audio sync.   When I down rez to 1280x720/ 23.9, sync is fine.

Does 1856x1044 with sound overtax the 5d2?

Curious if anyone has experience with various resolutions and sound recording.

Indeed!  This version works.  Audio files are trimmed and linked to the CDNG video clip.  Saves a lot of time importing media into Resolve.  thanks much!!

2 notes:

1.  After conversion from MLVP, for each clip, I get a folder containing the CDNG sequence and a wav file at the beginning of the folder; I also get a separate list of all the wav files.  So MLVP seems to be rendering duplicate wav files.  One in the video folder and another.

2. Some of the audio clips are out of sync.  I have not had time to experiment with many clips on my 5D2.  Audio seems to sync fine with 1280x720/23.9 but I loose sync with 1856x1044/23.9 clips.

Is it possible that the higher rez clips are over taxing the 5D2 causing dropped frames or other issues causing audio to loose sync?

"It works! I can upload exe-file to you without new release."

Fabulous.  Would love to try it.  Let me know how to try it out.

Thinking that I may have a settings issue in Davinci Resolve, I posted a similar question on the Resolve forum.

https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=53217

One response worth repeating:  " [MLVP] doesn't name the wav file according to convention, so Resolve doesn't recognize it as belonging to the DNG sequence."

guys, thanks for pitching in.  this would be a very useful fix.  thanks much.   I assume there is no in-camera fix for the longer audio clip length.
#20
Thank guys!  On the assumption that this is an issue for MLVProducer, suggest that the conversation move to this thread:

So this is likely a conversion issue with MLVProducer?   The audio files are not being generated at the same length as the video?
#22
so 0dB may be a useful setting when using a preamp?
#23
Danne, I noticed I had enable FPS Override.   Could this be messing with the audio recording?

I posted a related question on the General Help and Q&A board.
#24
Have only recently started to enable audio recording with ML.  For reasons I cannot determine, my ML audio files are slightly longer than the related video file when I bring those clips into DaVinci Resolve.

Canon 5d2.  I use MLVProducer to convert the MLV files with audio to CDNG and wav audio.  FPS override was ON and set to 23.976 in the ML menu (I suspect this could be an issue).  Canon menu set to 24 fps.

After I import the converted video and audio into DaVinci Resolve, the video and audio clips are not linked when I load them into a timeline.  I have to separately add the video and audio files to the timeline.  When I do so, the audio clip is always slightly longer than the video clip.   Most often the audio and video is synced (although the audio clip is longer); sometimes the audio is out of sync.

Just noticed this in the ML user manual under FPS Override:

"Sound Record: by default, ML will disable sound recording when FPS override is enabled; otherwise, audio will go out of sync and recording will stop. Only enable sound if you know what you are doing."   I must confess, am not sure how FPS override should be used.

Thanks Danne.  What settings do I need to check to make sure my audio length is adjusted?    Currently, all my audio files are slightly longer than my video files.  A frame rate issue?

And how do I confirm correct metadata in the wav file?

thanks.
