Alex,

Yes, we want to alter the image as it's being taken.

Levas,
I have access to imaging software, however, we want to do it in-camera, not after the fact.

Thanks for your replies.  I would be very surprised if this is even possible as it goes against the norm.

Hello Ladies and Gents,

We have a special project coming up and we need to have a line, or grid, drawn in the picture as it is taken.  This is for technical purposes -- the line(s) will be use as reference points in the final product.  Ideally, the line would be through the center, but at the end of the day, I don't really care where the line is so long as it's always in the same spot.  I know it can be done after the fact, but would like to do it as the pictures are taken.  As you can tell, aesthetics are not exactly an issue:)

Is ML able to do something like this?

TIA for any help you might provide!

General Help Q&A / Re: Dual ISO not working now. -- 6D

In my case, the reason it didn't work was because the camera's settings, not ML's, changed(on their own).  Would anything else cause the Dual Iso to not function - with the info I provided?  The reason I ask, is because for it to be more obvious in my case, it would require for someone(coder) to go through ML and consider, and list, every possible combination and give the solution.  I don't know much about coding, but I do know a bit about manufacturing, and I know that the easier it is for the user the more complicated it becomes for the designer/mechanic, coder, etc -- it also opens the door for more bugs/conflicts to be created.  The pop screen was not needed in my case, I already knew the feature was not working, I just didn't know why.  I had suspected an issue with ML, not Canon's, side of the OS.  I for one, don't think you can/should make things stupid proof.

No matter what you do, someone will complain.  I think it's a matter of education, I have now been educated -- I'll know to pay attention to that in the future.  In my case, I had not changed the RAW settings, and nobody else uses my camera.  ML has completely disappeared from the card in two different occasions and Dual ISO had failed to load up on other occasions(fixed by rebooting the camera).  I'm curious how the Canon side of the OS jumped from RAW only to SRAW and JPEG(I never use JPEG)?  I kept looking into ML only, so I'm surprised the issue was on the Canon side.

It's got nothing to do with obvious, I need glasses :(

To tell you the truth, I didn't realize the little messages would be related to fixing problems, I thought they just described the feature itself.

BTW, I'm not joking about the glasses!

You know, you are the kind of person that it would be very easy to dislike :)
You made look far too easy.
That fixed it.
The camera had gone from RAW only, to SRAW and Jpeg. Any idea why this would happen? Is it just a hick up?

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me.

One additional comment, Dual Iso is highlighted when not activated, grayed out when activated (but not functional)

Thank you for the quick response.
No change. Just one observation, sometimes the other features that were grayed out will be highlighted after turning the camera back on, this was happening even before the procedure you suggested. However, Dual Iso never gets highlighted, it stays grayed out, even if it is activated.

General Help Q&A / Dual ISO not working now. -- 6D
November 10, 2017, 03:23:04 PM
Hello Everyone,
I have used DualIso many, many, times(it's one of my favorite features).  After not using the feature for a couple of months, it's not working.  The module is loaded.  Dual ISO appears in the "EXPO" screen but it's grayed out.  I can access the different setting in Dual ISO but it definitely does not do the DI exposure.

It's happened a couple of times in the past where Dual ISO was not on the list, rebooting the camera would bring the feature back.  The only thing I have done differently is that about two weeks ago I used the camera in Av. for a family event.  The camera is used in manual mode about 99% of the time.

Details:
Camera 6D
Manual exposure
Build: 2017Oct31.6D116(had previous version, no difference with new version)
Lens: tried several, no difference
Tried on two different memory cards, exact same results(Samsung, feature worked before in both cards)
removed battery

The following features are grayed out, even when turned on:
Auto ETTR
Dual IO
Expo. Override
ExpSim

After trying different cards, different version, and removing the battery, I know it's something I have done, I just can't think of anything!

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Don't worry, no rush -- next Wednesday, before lunch, will be fine  ;)

ML does so much for me, that even if this feature was never implemented, I would still be more than happy to continue using it.  Just to let you know, I had to wait longer than I would have liked to get it for my 70D(mine needed the second 70D ML version).  I decided to get my 6D, only after making sure it would accept ML!

Thanks you, and all the contributors, for making ML possible!

Perfect, I'll give that a try -- I have never used video, will see how it goes:)  In the meantime, any chances of that being feature without the use of video?

I'm a big fan of ETTR, and use it as much as possible/practical.  I shoot quite a bit of macro, always in manual mode(exposure & focusing).  My camera is 6D.  Is it possible to show the clipped highlights/zebras while zoomed in?  Or is this for the "Feature Request" forum?  I just downloaded the latest nightly build to see if it was there, but  no joy.

I also have a 6D, it did disturb the sequence in mine.  But to tell you the truth, I never even considered the possibility of an alternative -- hopefully you will find the solution:)

Generally speaking, you install the latest version of any software.  The latest versions tend to fix(and sometimes introduce:( ) bugs.

I would take a different approach than the one recommended above.  Set up your camera on a tripod, use like F8 - F11, a low ISO(better image quality once you dial it in), set it on B and start at 30 seconds.  Keep in mind that the time doubles for every stop you increase in exposure, the shutter speeds will be 30 secs, 1min, 2min, 4min, etc.  You will either need a cable shutter release or ML's long exposure settings.  Keep light around you to a minimum as the camera might pick up the light on ground or trees in front of it.

Thanks Walter,

Like I said, I'm not concerned about the card itself -- I know cards will eventually fail, I was hoping to learn what to avoid/improve:)  I know the improper shutdown of the camera is a whining point for some, I have always been very careful about doing it properly.

I have 6D with ML (Nightly.2016May16.6D116) installed.  Suddenly camera says to format card or reinsert it, PC says to format it.  The card is fairly new, I expect it to be original, and had been working fine until this time.  I always format the card in the camera after transferring the pictures to the PC, I doubt this card has been formatted more than 80x.  Also, I always wait for the door-light on the camera to stop flashing before removing the card from the camera.  I have pictures on the card but don't really care about the card or the pictures, so that is not the issue.  I have not formatted the card yet in hopes of finding out what could have caused this and how to avoid it in the future.

BTW,
Don't know if this is related:
Several times(no pattern to it) the DualISO feature was not available on this firmware version, rebooting the camera brought the feature back.  I use very few features on ML, but the ones I use, I use very often!  DualIso is one of those feature.
Now that the card is acting up, the door-light doesn't come on when the door is opened.

General Help Q&A / Re: 6D Setup Problem
July 14, 2016, 11:48:21 PM
This is what I do:
Format the card in the computer.
I extract the zip files to folder on the computer.
Copy the extracted the items/files(ML folder, autoexcec.bin, & ML-SETUP.FIR) from the computer to the card's main directory/folder.
Load the files into the camera using the "firmware update feature in the camera".
Restart the camera.

If everything went well, the camera's back LCD will show you ML being loaded into the camera.  At that point, ML's features are available when you press the "Delete" button in the back of the camera.

I wonder what ML would bring to a still photographer. I know one limitation of the 6D that I'm darn eager to overcome. When using auto ISO (in aperture mode) I can't set the minimum shutter speed over 1/250. I'd like to be able to set it to 1/320 and above. Does installing ML make this possible?
I have never used video on my 6D, strictly photography!  I bought the 6D only after confirming that ML was available for it after using it on my 70D.  The camera is very seldom used in anything other than full manual.  Features I use all the time: 1) exposure lock; 2) RAW histogram; 3) zebras - the ability to see when highlights are getting clipped, I use ETTR 99% of the time. 4) DualISO 5) timed exposures longer than 30secs in Bulb.  The camera has many more features(which I seldom use), but I'm extremely happy with just these features.

Thank you Walter and Alex, you have made some very valid points.

Thanks for the replies.  Strictly hobby!  What else would I be able to extract from the Dual-ISO file that is not already present in the resulting DNG?  I have the camera set to shoot one normally exposed frame and the next with Dual-ISO.  Mind you, I will be keeping the original normally exposed file, the question is only about the usefulness of the Dual-ISO file.  If it matters, Canon 6D, ETTR(usually), ISO100(usually), processed with cr2hdr plug-in Lightroom v5.xx.

Hello Folks,
Is there any point keeping the Dual-ISO CR2 files after converting to DNG?  As of right now I have the normally exposed CR2 files as well as the DUAL CR2s, and the converted DNGs.  I imagine the DUAl and DNG files have just about the exact same info so it becomes totally redundant to keep both files and therefore little, if any, benefit.  The concern is not because of the space being taken, rather due to the added clutter.

The two crops have been added as requested.

Levas,
I think the histogram does not really help in this case:(, the images shown here don't really reach the full DR of regular RAW images.  I think that in this case, unless there is a down side, Dual ISO gives better images even when within the camera's (6D) DR.  Of course, this is in my taste, or lack of!

Here is the link for the two full images as well as the cropped snapshots.

Thanks for the histogram tip and the link to the article.  I'll post the samples later on today or tomorrow.

Trying to back off on ML, becoming too much of a fanboy:(

I use ML every time I use my cameras (70D & 6D).  I have been using it for several months on the 70D and just few weeks on the 6D(just bought it).  The cameras are used strictly for photography in manual mode and am a big fan of ETTR.  With that said, I just started playing with Dual-ISO (had not been able to get it to work before :( ).  I took several landscape photos this week, I would take two shots of every scene with the 6D, one with Dual ISO turned on and another with it off ---- no other difference -- manual mode and camera set on tripod --- ISO 100/800 F16, SS from 1/8" to 1.5", Canon 70-200L F4 IS(is disabled), circular polarizer.

The shots taken with Dual ISO have more "snap" to them, I can't get the other shots to match that "snap".  I'm using LR v5.7 and the monitor has been calibrated.

https://flic.kr/s/aHskpS5oMp  (images are labeled as Std and Dual ISO)

SO, the question: What are the disadvantages to using Dual ISO(quality, resolution, etc)?  So far I really like Dual ISO!

Thanks,
