Updated September 26th 2013

1. Make sure you have CF selected.  Need a 1000x CF card to get 1920x1080 at 24 fps.
2. Switch your camera to Video Mode (flip the video lever to the left), focus your subject and adjust for the scene .  Works in M, AV, TV modes.
3. Press Q and select the 1920 @ 30 fps  video specification from Canon Menu.
4. Use the Joy stick to move and make "blue" the video mode.
5. Scroll through the videos to 1920 30fps.  If you do not use FPS override the camera defaults to Canon settings.  See note 1
6. Press half shutter to return to Live View.
If you have not loaded the raw_rec module then:
7. Press trash button and go to Modules Tab using your joystick or scroll wheel.   (It is an icon with four little squares)
8. Use the scroll wheel or joystick to highlight the raw_rec module and then press the set button to enable it.
9. Reboot the camera, then press trash button and if the module loaded correctly you will see it in bright white with a green dot on the left.
10. Scroll to Movie with the large scroll wheel and then to Raw video with the small scroll wheel.
11. Enable RAW video by pressing the Set Button.  Look at the video settings and also look near the bottom of the screen for information about CF speed requirements to meet current fps and frame size.
12. Press Q and Set to chose the appropriate Resolution, or use the little scroll wheel to scroll from available options.  If your card is not fast enough then select acceptable resolutions.  Remember to look at the bottom of the screen to see how resolution affect card speed requirements.
13. Scroll to Aspect ratio 16:9 is the default.  You can scroll with the little wheel or press Set to change it.  By changing the aspect ratio the camera chooses an appropriate video height.  Some heights are not the most common ones but these combinations offer better writing speeds.  You may have to crop your video in post.
14. (AUDIO NOT AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW, USE EXTERNAL RECORDER-->) [s]If you want to record audio (wav file to SD card) scroll to Sound and select Separate WAV, or sync beep, or OFF[/s]
14. Preview: Auto.  Press Set to change it to: Canon, ML Grayscale, Hacked (see note 6)
15. Digital dolly: OFF On to allow the recording area to scroll from left-to-right or up-down during cropped video or when recording at smaller resolutions then 1920x1080.  Use the Joystick to control the direction of the scroll.
16. Frame skipping: OFF To continue recording even if skips frames then scroll to and select Allow.
17. Card warm-up: OFF Press set to select a warm-up file size when camera boots.  Some speed improvements obtained.
18. Memory hack: OFF. Press Set to on  This frees up more memory to get extra frames in the buffer.
19. Small hacks: OFF to improve the use of memory to increase recording buffer.
20.  Next option, Playback   After recording a RAW file you can preview it by coming back to this menu and scroll to Playback selection and pressing Set.
21. Press Q and then move to Overlay and set Global Draw to OFF.  See note 7.
22. To get back to LV just press trash button or half shutter.
23. To start and stop recording press the LV button

OPTION FOR 24/25 FPS RECORDING:

24.  Move to the Movie tab and select FPS override with the scroll wheel.  (see note below)
25. Press the Q button
26. Change the Desired FPS to 23.97 using the small (top) scroll wheel.
27. Move to the Optimize for with the large scroll wheel.
28. Change to Exact FPS with the small scroll wheel.
29. Press the Q button and then press the Set button (on the center of the large scroll wheel) to enable FPS override
30. Now FPS should read 23.97.

Note 1: It is best to set the Canon video format to 1920 30 fps.  When you do this and set the FPS Override to 24 fps you will have very little variation in fps when you switch from zoom mode to standard mode.

Note 6. Canon preview is standard full color, ML Grayscale is in B&W and also shows the video in its final cropped view (used for framing), Hacked is special fast hack to increase card writing speed at the expense of freezing Live View.

Note 7.  If you set Global Draw OFF you will loose histogram, zebras, etc.  But you will gain speed.  In some cases Global ON is more likely to get pick frames since CPU is working very hard, and also consumes much more power.

One small addition from me:

You may use your EOS Utility in liveview mode to remotely frame, focus, start raw rec and stop your recording. There is no live preview while you are recording though.

Cheers

HI thanks for the info but for some reason I dont seem to be able to get anything to work. I downloaded the 5D mk3 firmware , loaded it on my 5D
after checking that i was on the 1.1.3 canon firmware. Then I load the magic lantern firmware and it seems to load fine. Then I press the trash button and the magic Lantern welcome page comes up for Alfa 3 and I press it again but i see non of the features you speak of in the MOVIE menu like frame rate override or REC RAW. DO I have the right firmware? Please Help ! Thanks

Hello everybody

I think i following the instructions correctly but after record a video on 1000x 64 GB computer bay and back to the mac, instead of multiples raw pictures (like it should be) i just find in the 100EOS5D file a heavy single raw file.... And i can't do anything with that.
Witch step i missed? Have you got an idea?

Thanks

Thank you.

So on the CF there's only one file per recording and it's only after
using the Raw2dng.app that we have all the frames for grading?

I'm asking because the raw2dng.app don't convert my raw file from
the CF at this point so i don't Know if it's me or the app that isn't stable?

Sorry for my english.

Renato, I have an important question, I was looking for hours in the posts and I can´t find an answer: when you shoot Raw in 5D III, the settings in the camera, like Presets, WB, etc, has any influence in the RAW files? I know appear easy but I cannot find any difference shooting in Neutral or Standard, or changing WB. Please tell me if I am wrong with this. Thanks a lot and sorry if this is not a post to this.

Hi thanks for the great info all over this blog, its amazing!

I just followed all of the steps to recording raw video on my new MK3, Komputer bay 64GB card, AE, everything works great except for one thing.... It seems like during every recording, a frame is dropped in the first 13-16 frames causing the recording to stop. Originally I had this option on some sort of override to prevent the camera from stopping the recording. Is there any reason why I would have so many frames being dropped? Maybe its some sort of setting on my end? or installation issue?

I really appreciate the responses in advance! Thanks!

One of the advantages of raw is being able to define these type of things later in post.  Picture styles such as neutral have no effect on the final recorded raw file.  So things like, contrast, color, sharpness, etc, are not baked into the raw file.  You will essentially be defining your own look when grading in post.  White balance is another thing you can choose later after shooting.  At the moment, the white balance you are shooting at does not get saved correctly to the raw metadata so you will always have to select it later in post.  That may change with future development but at the moment, if you bring your raw dng's into Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), and select "As Shot" for white balance, it will not correctly reflect the white balance you shot at.

However, you may want to use a certain picture style which can assist you in focusing, such as landscape with the sharpness turned all the way up.  This is just for preview and will not have an effect on the final raw file.

I hope that helps a little.

The option to skip frames still exists under Raw Video... Frame Skipping... Allow.   Most folks with this card can easily record 1928x1080 and even 1920x1152 continuously (myself included).  First thing would be to check that it is not defaulting to saving to the SD card.  Next thing to check would be to run the built-in benchmark utility for the card.  You'll find this under Debug... Benchmarks... Card R/W benchmark.  Write speed will likely vary a bit but you should be seeing write speeds anywhere from 70-90s MB/s.  If you get substantially slower speeds, than you should try to return your card if possible for another one.

I have the same camera and card as you do.

Thanks Platu, I changed my resolution to 1920 x 1080 and allowed frame skipping. It works better, more consistent for longer but still in an avereage 400 frame clip I'm dropping 60 frames :'( Any other possibilities or suggestions as far as settings go?

High ISO spee NR = OFF
Higthlight tone priority = OFF
Multiple Exposure = Disable
HDR Mode = Disagle HDR

And finally there is a new Hack in Raw video menu called Memory hack.  try it, it allows a few more frames when you are in situations where the card is not fast enough.  It frees up some more memory. It is in todays build!

If you tried mine and Renato's suggestions, and are using the latest build, it's likely down to the card.  Inconsistent write speed drop-offs will cause skipping and there's no solution for this other than getting a more stable fast card.  For what it's worth, I have had to return 2 Komputerbay 64 cards already... 1 dead on arrival, another was too slow.  But still the best bang for the buck.

iam very interested in the 300x Raw Crop Mode / zoom ability demonstrated in this video, problem is the newer builds changed the method the user described.

can anyone verify if it is still possible with the new June build?

here is the thread for raw postprocessing for the mac using raw2dng.
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5508.0

I read there at the end they also have problems with this to work with the jun 13 build. The poster mentioned Rawmagic works for mac.
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6218.0

Try that, I suggest to stick with the newer builds for the camera and try to find the extractor that works.

I am using June 22 build and I have NO audio option in the RAW video menu. And yes I do have audio set to auto or manual in the Canon menu. I have camera in manual mode.

Using 2 recent builds (June 22nd and June 25th) raw2dng nor RAWMagic convert the RAW file: "This ain't a lv_rec RAW file" and "Could not parse framerate" However I can playback the RAW on the camera, so its recording properly.

I am shooting 1080p @ 24 on a Lexar 1000x 32Gb card
Both raw2dng and rawmagic are the latest versions

Is there a build that converts properly?

Thanks

For some time I thought I had gotten a couple of bad Komputebay cards, but I sat around fiddling with the settings.

Now... I'm only writing this, because even though I thought I had understood what settings were best to use, I apparently didn't and I kinda only found out how it worked by chance.

So, start off by going to your Canon settings.

Go to the yellow wrench symbol, first section.

There you choose "Record func+card/folder sel."

Then choose "Record func."

Choose "Standard"

Then select "Record/play"

Choose "1"

Now go back to the red camera symbol first section

Select "Image quality"

For "Raw" choose SRAW (you can also choose the line symbol to the left... but I don't see a bandwidth increase.)

For "JPEG" choose the line symbol furthest to the left.

The reason I wasn't getting enough bandwidth out of my cards was because I had not chosen to record "standard"... I had both cards set to S3.

With this selection I'm getting a steady 94mb/s with both my cards, enabling me to shoot 1920:1080 contiously without dropping frames. I even have a steady 7% idling at the same time. (No global draw on...)

With global draw on in liveview, including small waveform, focus peak and crop marks, I'm getting continous 1920:1080 after 14 secs with no dropped frames. 86mb/s

Before you behead me for stupidity... please understand that I had misunderstood the proper settings for doing raw, and I have a suspicion that other people have as well since I'm seeing reports of people not getitng proper bandwidth from their cards.

So if you can't seem to get that full HD working, check your settings against the above and try again.

This test was carried out with the june 28th build, cards used were two 64gb Komputerbay 1000x CF cards formatted with Disk Utility to exFat and a 16gb Sandisk Class 10 SD card in the sd bay. (the latter containing ML)

FOR POST WORKFLOW on MAC.....

The latest RawMagic works like a charm in my opinion. Dropped my raw files into it and got out the DNGs.

If you download DaVinci Resolve Lite 9 from Black Magic website, it will see and edit those DNGs without a problem, allowing you to do pregrade before exporting the files to what ever format you wish (that is not so heavy in file size.)

From what I understand this is not too far from the workflow of the BMC?

Anyways... if you can deal with some transcoding time, then the workflow isn't too hard anymore in my opinion.
A test clip I made (19 seconds short), took around twice that to spit out to ProResHQ after doing some simple curves.

Also, you can download the Ginger HDR plugin for both Premiere and AE and that will allow you to work NATIVELY on the Canon raw files. Be warned though... they are tough to crunch through.

So a big huge thanks... again... to the ML team. The 5D really is fun now :)

It appears that you have not loaded the new experimental RAW video software:
Look here for 5D3 latest update:

Where to get Compiled Nightly Builds?
HERE: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5413.0

No joy here...
Have had luck getting ml-5D3-113.fir to work but have no M Tab or raw functionality that I've found.
Have tried what I THINK is the most recent nightly build "magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Jul15 but I'm not certain it even applies to the MKIII is it's not in the ensuing .60D.550D etc.  (it does edit the name of the firmware, but the menus are not available.)
Any idea where to find a build that will provide raw recording on a 5D MKIII?

So there is no Raw even on the 5D MK2?

At this point I can't get anything after Alpha 3 to even install on my MkIII.  All appears to go well, I get the "firmware Ver.:1.1.3-ml-v2.3.NEXT" and even get the smiley face below the EnableBootDisk.  But it's just taunting me, because ML is nowhere to be seen.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I just came across this news --> http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/16/toshiba-exceria-pro-sd-cards/

new sd card from toshiba using uhs ii standard...and can write 240MB/s

do you think its possible to replace the SD Card slot in the 5D mk III with a UHS II compatible one and use this new Toshiba card for full sensor full res raw recording ?

That'd truly be a godsend for timelapsers, but I'm thinking the framerate for full res (or 4K) raw would be rather low compared to full motion 24/25/30 fps. The bitrate for that would be filling up a large card in a couple of minutes too.
I'd be happy with 0,5fps recording at 4K resolution without wearing out the shutter, and at a low timelapse framerate it would probably be around 10MB/sec. Now if I could only get long shutters in video, cause 1/30 sec shutter-openings is not very well suited for nighttime timelapse video which I'm focusing on these days.

Hi lads,

I bought Transcend CF 32GB, 1000x which should have max speed 160MB/s read and 120MB/s write. I tested the card after it wasn't able to record even second of RAW video @ full HD resolution. I got the speed of 34MB/s read and 28MB/s for write on blackmagic speed test. Is that card china fake or is there anything with settings of raw recording..? On smaller resolution is films a few seconds only. Should I return it straight away how to find out or do anything with the card?? Thanks for any reply!

absolutelly, it was in card reader for speed test and CF slot for recording in mk3, actually the SD card can record couple of second, the CF none..

Title: Re: How to record: -- RAW VIDEO ON 5D3 --

Try reading my reply #26..... it all can depend on your Canon menu setup or that one card you are using.

You need to prevent the camera from using both cards for writing... if both cards are enabled for writing the slowest card SLOT will become the lowest denominator, ie. the SD slot will dictate the writing speed which is slower than the CF slot.

Also, some 1000x speed cards aren't really as fast as they say they are. Even the Komp bay 64gb 1000x cards will max out around 100mb/s if you got a really good batch. My best Komp Bay cards are steady around 95mb/s with Global Draw off.

So maybe you got unlucky with the card... and otherwise, tripple check the Canon menu settings, which by the way you might have to set again and again when you take out cards / switch battery.

Hi, I am brand spankin new here so please be gentle if this is a really dumb question :)  So I have been following the Canon Raw development and like everyone else here I am sure, think it is exciting times indeed!  Now with the price drop of the MIcro 4/3's BMCC, it makes it both confusing and exciting times ahead...

So, as pointed out, this is a potentially very stupid newbie question but here goes anyway....

Does the new Canon Firmware that enables you to record to an external recorder have any place with the Magic Lantern Raw developments with the 5DIII?  There seems to be so much talk about recording with a fast enough CF card for shooting RAW, does there exist or is it at all likely in the future to exist, a possibility to record RAW on the 5DIII onto one of these external recorders?

Ok, thanks so much, look forward to hearing any thoughts or responses.

Same problem for me, no options to record sound while shooting raw. Any ideas why? I am using now one of the latest builds by laurenco, but i have never seen that opertunity in audio controls. HELP

There are currently no latest builds with sound enabled and the reason is because it is out of sync.

Hello everybody.

I need help. Im using the ML in my 5D MIII.

Everything is working perfectly except that I can not open the last clip of each CF card.

When the camera shows me that there is no more space available it stops reccording, and this clip is not saved properly because later I can not open it.

It is, for example, a 2GB RAW clip but I can convert it in DNG files. It says that the file is empty.

Can someone help me to recover this files? I need to fix these clips!

Im using 16GB CF Card.
Thankssss

I have been testing and following the raw development since start, and must say, about time for a thorough easy updated summary for all newbies, thanks RenatoPhoto!

For European countries 25fps is standard. With raw_rec enabled there is a possibility of 34fps with fps override on 2.35:1 Cinescope(5DIII+Lexar 1000x). Which gives a slight overcrank of a few percentage when interpreted to 25fps, nice!

Your point "14. Digital dolly" I think could be removed, sins you are talking explicitly of full frame recording.

Also, I think this topic should be locked for comments for obvious reasons.

First question: Do the nightly builds include RAW video. I had read elsewhere that raw video was only in the April alpha release.

Second: Do we need the bootflag to load the magic lantern? Or is it only for development. I read on here that right now the bootflag cannot be removed and so we would need to reload the magic lantern software everytime we use it and cannot upgrade to the higher firmware builds?

Third: If I have a fast sd card and fast compact flash, does it record to both simultaneously?

Thank you and sorry for the confusion.

1. Nightly builds include RAW
2. Yes, bootflag is needed to get RAW
3. Only if use the builds from the new RAW Format 2.0 development.  This spaning function has not been ported to the unified builds i.e. nightly builds

We know about how cinematic style are videos when you shot at 24 fps.

As you know, you can set 23,98.

I can't see any difference shooting in both fps, any suggestion about this, or advice?

Thanks.

Too be honest I don't think that it really is that big of deal seeing how little the difference is between 23.98 and 24.

You should use 23.976 if you are going to transfer your footage on the NTSC telecine. Other than that it doesn't matter. Just don't mess with 24 and 23.976 to save your sync.

I wonder, if there is a possibility to turn OFF "force left" option which is now enabled by default (I am using newest builds and trying new stuff every 2-3 days) . Couple months ago when raw rec was in early stage there was such an option. I know, that with this feature ON raw recording performance is better but now, when zoom 2,5K recording is possible and quite usable i would like to minimize 2,something crop by using widest lens possible - im my case tokina 11-16. This lens (and other ultra wide angle lenses) has visible sharpness loss in the corners, recording with "force left" gives beautiful sharp picture in the right side (sensor center) and distorted and muddy in the left. Is it possible to have an option "force left ON/OFF" back again? If it is possible will it allow to record 5x crop with pixels cropped from the sensor center rather than from left-center? Thanks

Thanks for "How to" guide!

Is it possible to continuous recording 30 fps for 1920x1080 with Lexar 1000x 32GB?
I use magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2014Feb11.5D3113.zip.
mlv_rec module

24/25 fps continuous recording works fine! :)

30 fps (29.97) - the recording time is 9-10 sec.
Is any way to make card more fast? Special formatting?

I also noticed the 32GB Lexar is more fast then 64GB/128GB Lexar cards:
http://www.robgalbraith.com/camera_wb_multi_page7de5.html?cid=6007-12452

raw_rec module show 89-91MB/s
What is bitrate for 30 fps?

1 DNG file is about 3 670 178 bytes
30 fps ~105MB/s
25 fps ~ 87MB/s
Is it correct?

Has audio recording been restored in any builds since september? Searched the forums but wasn't able to find anything conclusive.

Thanks

I have tested two builds:
magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2014Feb03.5D3113.zip - no sound module (mlv_snd), no sound in MLV file;
magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2014Feb11.5D3113.zip - has sound module (mlv_snd) and sound is in MLV file exist.

==
Upd:
To turn sound ON go in Audio tab and set MLV Sound = ON

Hi Thanks very much Renato for this tutorial, and all the other helpful replies!

However I cannot find the option to change preview to ML, grayscale, hacked. Is this inside the magic lantern menu?

I'm using a Lexar 1000x card, when the Canon video format to 1920 30 fps, and the FPS Override set to 24 fps in Magic lantern, I cannot shoot at a higher resolution than 1920 by 720 without dropping a LOT of frames.

If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be very appreciated.

Many thanks
Marc

I wonder if anyone has problems with audio delay in mlv files. I discovered that the sound is not synchronized in my recordings. I am using canon 5dm3 123 last night build and lexar 256GB 1066x card and 25fps with 1085p resolution . Is it any for me unknown setup? Anu sugestions?

I do not have 30fps 1920x1080 option in Canon menu. How do I get it?

Tried the following, but still its dropping frames on 1920x1080 at 24 fps
Also, it stops recording automatically.

Latest findings to prevent frame drops:

You should check that in Canon Menu:
Image Quality = Raw
Auto Lighting Optimizer = OFF
Long exp. noise reduction = OFF
High ISO speed NR = OFF
Highlight tone priority = OFF
Multiple Exposure = Disable
HDR Mode = Disable HDR

Running some more tests on recording the RAW on 5D mark III.
Discovered that it does not drop frames when set to 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
Which is good for me.

Avdshare Video Converter will take change MP4 file frame rate as an example and it can also serve to change AVCHD, MTS, M2TS, MXF, XAVC, ProRes, MPG, AVI, FLV, MOV, WMV, MKV and almost all video format frame rates

Hello, I have followed all of the detailed instructions (Thank you VERY much by the way!) and yet when I start recording there is terrible latency in the live view.  I'm talking nearly a second!  Even when I adjust focus I have to wait a moment for the adjustment to show up.  I'm shooting on a 5D3 with Canon 1.2.3 build. What have I done wrong?

Please check your fps settings. Turn off fps override and retry

@RenatoPhoto

Dear Renato, maybe it's time to update the first post for the new 10/12 bits. I don't know if it's preferible set in canon Menu 30 fps, to get 25. I'm not up to date. You can delete this post or just tell me by PM and I will do it.

I will do an update when this "experimental" build gets incorporated to nightly builds.  For now best to limit the 10/12 bit discussions to this thread:

With respect, RenatoPhoto, your instructions do not match what is on the 5D3 menu lists. For example, there is no file called: raw_rec module (in the crop build for 1.1.3 for example). Other instructions are either not complete or lacking extra info saying which file they pertain to. Possibly because these are 'general' instructions and every build is different? How can anyone know? There is no footnote.

On any walk-through, missing out one setting (or a number) is crucial for some. It can affect the operation of the final outcome and (in my case) cause issues (where I nearly bricked a camera due to lack of instructional detail but with care, guided back to normal)!

I tried everything. Firmware 1.2.3. Firmware 1.1.3 (and I ain't stupid - I can write in C) but sadly, still no 4k for me. Max setting 1920 that is stable. Even the excellent  Topic: crop_rec on steroids: 3K, 4K, 1080p48, full-resolution LiveView post video  that told me exactly what to did not work. Why? If the instructions were complete then why didn't it work?

I suggest it is because the build used on the Vimeo film is the ONLY one it works on.

Sadly, now there is no way in the world to find the build on the crop_rec_4k.2017Apr29.5D3113 file built on 29. 04. 2017 - seems to be like the holy grail in that it seems to be only one that works the miracles - but nobody can find it! Google can't. I can't. Who is left?

But I do not feel like giving up. Desperate, yes. Frustrated, yes. So please don't delete me and someone, somewhere, for the love of ML, please show me where I can find a detailed (as in something that really, really does work) and gets me recording smoothly.

And if someone can, I will throw £ at the bearer of the best solution that works and put the results on Youtube to help everyone else that really, really wants this to work.
