Title: 550d only turns on without card in it
Post by: carlio on March 21, 2017, 08:15:42 AM
Hi all,

I have two SD cards with ML on them and have been using them successfully for several months. I came to use my camera today and it refused to turn on. I did the standard things of taking out the battery and waiting, trying a completely formatted card (which had never been in this camera before). My situation is that if no card is in the camera, it will boot and say "no card found". If I put any card in it - ML or not - it simply remains black. The autofocus works and the flash even pops up in dark conditions, but it's not taking any photos or doing anything. Clearly it's not quite dead, and with no card I can at look through the menu and change settings.

I also tried another card which turned out to be broken. That is, I could not even format it on my PC, it must be a bit broken. The camera will quite happily look at the card and tell me it cannot read it, and I can't format it in camera or on the PC so it's just gone. However what confuses me is that the camera deals with this well. It's only "healthy" cards it does nothing with.

Edit: Another point of interest: it will happily take photos with no card in (clearly not saving them but it shows that it's basically fine)...

Any ideas?
Thanks!
Carl

It sounds like a physical issue of some sort - have you checked to see if there is some dirt/obstruction (or possibly some damage) in the memory card slot?

Sounds like either a damaged connection/pin within the camera housing/reader... or a formatting issue from removal of the card unexpectedly. I am not experienced enough to give a better guess, but start with the card issue, test your cards, then test your camera reader. Format all cards on the camera if possible, remove all ML from the camera and the cards. It should narrow down the hardware vs software issue. Errors also seem to appear with faulty batteries. Don't rule that out yet.
